“You still took us here? Aren’t you supposed to be our protectors or whatever?” Olga cut him off, anger in her voice.

I didn’t her, even though I was pretty ticked off at his words.

“We had to. Not all who cross this path wind up gone. Just some. We can walk it, and as long as we don’t mess with anyone or give any reason for us to be questioned—”

“We’re the military,” I cut him off. “The uniforms give us away. I think that would be reason enough for anyone, don’t you think?”

His jaw ticked, and his eyes flashed, but I detected anger this time as he glowered at me. “Don’t give them reason, and they will leave you alone.”

I stepped up to him, daring him to do anything. “I’m pretty sure they already have reason enough,” I said in a low voice. “You’re welcome, by the way. Wouldn’t have anyone to take this way if we’d all died. Now would you?”

His eyes sparked in anger, nostrils flaring, but he said nothing. After a prolonged moment, the wolf turned on his heel, storming to another soldier to speak with them. When he was out of hearing range, my body sagged, and I drew to the ground, wiping at more blood before leaning forward to press my forehead against my knees.

“ZuZu?” Carli asked softly, kneeling next to me and putting a hand on my shoulder.

I shook her off, not wanting to be touched for the time being. It only made it worse. “Not right now, Carli,” I mumbled, my stomach clenching. “I just need something to eat, I think.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie. I wasn’t sure what I needed, but I sort of hoped that a small bite to eat would replenish the energy I felt fading away, the adrenaline rush that had pushed me to use so much power in the first place. Plus, all the power I had used was another energy sucker itself. Food could help with that, couldn’t it?

Noise became garbled in my ears, and I felt everything drain from me. This wasn’t good at all. My body swayed, and I could feel a trickle of cold running down my spine. But then I realized it wasn’t just exhaustion. Something was coming – it was drawing forth. Something I didn’t want to happen. But fighting it wasn’t an option, not at this point. Not while I was so damn weak. I still tried, though, even if I knew it was useless. My head spun as I felt the claws grip me.

Shadow witch, the soldier’s voice whispered in my ears as blackness tumbled over me.
