"I'm fine, honey. You're such a wonderful human being and I don't want to lose you. You are so important to me. Please never leave."

I felt a little sad to hear that. She was so wonderful and I never wanted to let her go either. If only she knew how much I cared about her.

"Baby, I…"

Claire turned her back to me and faced the wall. She seemed too sad to talk and I wondered if she wanted some space.

"Do you want me to leave you alone baby?" I asked, confused. I got no answer though.

"Well, then talk to me!" I nearly exclaimed. I hated it when she gave me the cold shoulder. There was no reason I deserved that. She was just like that.

"Jonah. Could you leave me for a bit?" She finally said. I knew that was where she was headed, and I didn't mind. But I genuinely had a few things to discuss with her so we could clarify things. She was such a wonderful person, and it would take a lot for me to let go.

"Okay, baby. I'll leave you for a bit as you wish. But you have to know that this is not fair. I don't deserve all you do to me. We can always work through this together, no matter how much shit we are in."

She said nothing, and then I left. I wished to go back in there and give her a piece of my mind but it did not matter. There was no point in doing that when she had heard me the first time already.

I met Will inside when I got back to my apartment. He looked happy and was munching on a chocolate bar when I got in.

"Dad."

"Son, where did you get that? "

"Oh, a friend. Today is his birthday, and his mother gave him junk to share with us at school. Some of the boys teased him for doing that, but every single person collected the junk anyway. And yeah, I was part of the jeering."

I smiled at his brute honesty. I had truly raised a good chap, and he was never afraid to speak the truth. I was not a huge believer in being a bully though, and a hypocritical one at that.

"Son, if you were getting the chocolate, you didn't have to laugh at him. It just makes you fake, you know?"

"Yes, Dad. You are right. But it was just gimmicks anyway. I didn't mean it."

"Okay, son."

"Dad, did you go out?"

"No, I was at Claire's place."

"Oh."

I got the hint. But I didn't mind because I knew he didn't want her anyway. I only wished he could accept her more so my mind would be at rest.

Will was the only other overly significant member of my family. If he didn't approve of Claire, it was a problem because we would all have to be together at some point.

I went out that night to have a drink at Pauline's bar. Claire didn't work there at the time so I didn't meet her there. The new girl placed in her stead was quite beautiful though, and her customer service was top-notch.

I wasn't swayed though. I believed she could change anytime soon, especially once she had begun to feel comfortable in her office. I saw through her, and I didn't particularly like that because I had such eyes for everyone.

She brought a few drinks to me and smiled at me. Although she was very beautiful, from up close I could see that Claire was still a class above her in beauty. But she seemed to know me already. Maybe she knew a little too much.

After a few bottles, I called Claire to hear her voice. She picked up immediately and spoke into the phone, albeit dryly.

"I miss talking at length with you baby. You have to keep quiet and listen to me for a bit."

I said a lot to her that night. I could not help it, being drunk. I said all of my minds, but she didn't say much in reply. She just kept replying to me like she was taking orders.

"Baby, I love you."

"I love you too, Jonah. But sometimes you make it so hard. Be nice to me love."
