They talked for a long time, and because I was out of earshot, I could not make out their words. But Will kept a straight face while she talked. I could tell that he was not interested, but still listening.

Suddenly, they burst into laughter and I went over to ask what was up.

"No, she was telling me about her experiences with you. I can't lie Dad, but they were funny to hear."

I smiled and asked what those experiences were. I laughed when he told them to me. I didn't expect Claire to tell him all that.

But I was happy to laugh along with them. As far as I was concerned, it was much less awkward than it used to be, and that was progress.

"Nevertheless, I don't want you to have issues with your Dad because of me. I'm not here to split you up. I'm here to build a stronger family and relationship with you. Just let me into your heart, Will. That's all."

Will nodded and stood up to go. He hugged me from behind, and I began to have flashbacks. He had grown so big, compared to the days he was much younger and he would wrap his small hands around my waist from behind when he was happy. The arms were never enough to go around me though. Now, they were.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Claire

Ineverknewitwould work, but it did. Will became more friendly, and he talked better with me. After a couple of weeks, we had all formed a solid relationship that was so great to see. But as life would have it, it was not the end of it all.

I woke up one day feeling so much pain in my belly. I cried because the pain was quite severe. After a while, it subsided a bit and I called Jonah. He rushed over, looking terrified because I sounded terrible over the phone.

He rushed me to the hospital, and I was so happy that he did. I felt loved for a bit.

The doctor ran a few tests. According to him, I had undergone a few false contractions. Jonah was terrified when he heard that since he was no medical practitioner. But the doctor assured him that it would all be okay. I hoped so because we were finally about to be happy.

Jonah bought a lot of provisions for me. I was so annoyed during those few days. He was always there for me, sitting beside my bed while I battled through the pain. It was so refreshing to see him do that much for me, especially when I was not sure I'd do that much for him.

Pauline came to visit once. She was so compassionate and did a little too much, probably to show Jonah that she knew me more than him. I wasn't so sure anyway.

She got me provisions too, and asked the doctor to take care of me else she would deal with him. It was funny to hear that from an old, frail woman, but it was not out of order. She was a tough woman, and that was why I always kept her close to me.

After Pauline left, Will came to visit the next morning. He came with flowers and get well soon cards, smiling ear to ear as he gave them to me.

"Get well soon. I can't wait to see you outside. Even if you can't play too much because of your condition, I still want to see you happy anyway."

"Why, thanks a lot, Will. I will try my best to recover as soon as possible. I feel stronger now, and there is no reason not to be positive now," I said.

After Will left, I was left with Jonah again. He was so sweet and loving that I felt unworthy of all that love. I felt a little bit as if I had done too little for him. Jonah fought so hard for me.

There was a day when one of the nurses didn't give me my meds early. According to the doctor, I was supposed to take them in the morning, but she didn't give me any. Her name was Nancy, and she did not seem to like me very much.

I noticed that she admired Jonah. He was attractive alright, but she showed her desire for him a little too much, and she did it a few times in front of me. I told Jonah about my fears regarding her, but he laughed and said it was nothing. But this day was different.

Jonah found out that she didn't give me my meds that morning. He had left the hospital for a bit to get me provisions, but when he got back, he asked if I had taken my drugs alongside the food he left with me. I didn't eat the food though, and that had already gotten him upset.

"So where are the meds?"

"She didn't bring them yet."

"She didn't bring them yet?"

Jonah dropped the provisions and stormed out of the ward in rage. He went straight to Nancy and gave her the tongue-lashing of her life. Afterward, he went straight to the doctor and reported her. I didn't even expect him to do that.

Nancy came into the ward reluctantly and gave me my meds. Her behavior confirmed to me that she had done it on purpose. After she brought them, the doctor came back with Jonah. He examined me and told Jonah I would not be here for much longer.

The smile on Jonah's face was almost angelic when he heard the news. I didn't know if he was happy for me, or if he was just happy to stop having to be in the hospital every day. Both ways, it was good news for us.

Jonah was so extra protective for the next few days I had to spend. He even refused some visitors from coming to see me because it seemed to stress me out each time. I had to be honest with him. I didn't want visitors either.
