Page 15 of Love After Never

“Took you long enough to wake up,” he murmurs.

Gabriel.

“Did you sing me lullabies while I was out?” I ask sweetly. “Probably the best sleep I’ve had in months.”

I refuse to give him any sign of distress or to struggle against the ropes. I already tested them; they’re immovable.

“I bet you have a lovely voice,” I joke darkly.

He won’t look up at me yet, just continues to fiddle with the knife in his hand until it catches the dull sickly light from the single bulb overhead.

“Want to tell me why you’ve been tailing me?” he asks.

“Nope.”

“You clearly want something from me. If you’re that horny, you only had to follow through when I asked you the other day.” He grins at me, a flash of white teeth, his long dark hair hiding half of his face. “I won’t even punish you too badly.”

“Having to spend time in your company is punishment enough. And look.” I jerk against the ropes. “You know me well enough already to know I have to be tied down to be able to tolerate you.”

“Are you always such a stone-cold bitch?” he throws back.

I force myself to shrug, hiding my wince at the movement. “Sometimes. On Tuesdays I like to really go for broke. Too bad it’s not Tuesday.”

We stare at each other for a long moment, with neither of us willing to break. Finally Gabriel pushes away from the wall and stops in front of me only a few feet away and close enough for me to remember the way he smelled at the club.

My stomach is back to flip-flopping madly at his presence.

“I don’t take kindly to people who lie to me,” he warns.

I cock my head to the side. “Did I lie? Is it Tuesday after all?”

“Purposely beating around the bush is as much a lie as anything else. Let me make one thing clear,DetectiveSinclair. I’ve got the power here. And you’ve got nothing.”

He must have gone through my information. I keep my badge and my ID in my back pocket and I don’t need to squirm to know they’re not with me anymore.

I struggle against the ball of ice in my chest, which only threatens to melt when Gabriel steps right into my personal space. The knife dangles limply between his fingers but there is nothing unintentional about him. Every move he makes or does not make is deliberate. Calculated.

“Why are you a bug up my ass, Detective?” The hint of a cruel smile plays over his full lips. “I’ve done nothing wrong. Nothing you’ll be able to pin on me, anyway.”

I’m willing to bet he hasn't been on the good side of the law his entire life.

“You’ve been watching and following me for the last four days. I want to know why. Not such a hard thing to answer.”

“My business,” I answer simply. “Official police business.” I jerk against the ropes again but only once. “My precinct isn’t going to take this lightly when I write up my report and include details of this abuse.”

The look on his face threatens to undo me, even when he holds all the cards. Playing by his rules would be the smartest thing to do but…

I’m no Sub.

Just because this man is the Daddiest Dom I’ve ever seen does not mean I’m going to bend or break for him.

“Let’s see you use that knife as well as you use your dick,” I add. “Quit playing around.”

He glances down at the knife. “This is just for comfort.” He flips it up in the air, his anger barely restrained before tossing it at me. It lands in the wooden back of the chair way too close to my shoulder for comfort.

“I’m going to rip you apart,” I tell him conversationally. “As soon as I get out of this chair you’re going to wish you hadn’t fucked with me.”

I run my tongue along my teeth, fixated on the glint in his eyes. The specks of brown and gold there that stand out against the rich texture of green.
