Page 53 of Love After Never

At least I think that’s what he says as someone separates from the crowd, heading purposely toward us. I blink at the other woman’s approach. A woman with a closely shaved head, eyes lined to resemble a cat, and a jewel-toned business suit with the skirt riding high on her creamy thighs.

Shit, what is Jade doing here? The bottom drops out from under me.

“Well.” She pauses for dramatic effect as I fight against every urge to cover my naked lower half. “I never thought I’d see the day whenyoutook to the stage.” Jade flicks her gaze from my head to my knees as though she can see all the parts of me that throb. “Lovely performance.”

Fuck, why is she here? She saw the whole thing?

“You two put on quite the show together,” she continues. She crosses her arms over her chest, pushing her cleavage up higher. “I’m impressed.”

Gabriel sets me on my feet and adjusts himself inside his pants. I covertly grab my pants from him and let the legs of my jeans dangle over me.

His gaze is anything but polite, bordering on hostile. “I have some unfinished play to do. If you’ll excuse us.”

Yes, unfinished play. I’ve bought my ticket to access the information I’ll need, my body the currency. Time to move on to the next step. He bands his arm around my waist and tucks me against the safety of his body. The warning in his tone is painfully clear, and anyone in their right mind should do their best to put distance between us and them.

Naturally, Jade doesn’t care. She keeps her focus intently on Gabriel. “Let me know if you’re ever up for a repeat performance. The Underground would be thrilled to have both of you.”

I force a smile to my face. “Glad you enjoyed,” I purr to Jade. “I chose the right partner to make my debut.” I play along, squeezing him right back. “Truly beautiful cock.”

“Yes. I’m aware,” she replies tightly.

I lean into Gabriel, the smallest bit of give I’ll allow from myself, and the smallest amount of comfort taken from him.

His fingers press to the small of my back to guide me away from Jade and leave her behind.

“She wants you,” I whisper to Gabriel.

He grimaces, his lip curled in a silent snarl, and ignores me until he tugs open the door to one of the private rooms. It’s occupied, of course, and the four people inside are a tangled mass of limbs.

“Get the fuck out. Now.” He barks out a warning to the foursome and waits until they scatter before he locks us inside. By the time he turns to me, his expression is downright hostile. “Are you jealous?” he asks me.

The strange energy between us gives another pulse, stronger than before, and I have to think carefully about my words. I stare at him like I’ve never seen him, only then realizing he still holds me.

I yank my arm away from him but he doesn’t let go. His eyes search my face.

“Of course I’m not jealous,” I reply evenly.

His hands caress my shoulders, my neck, my arms. “How do you feel? What are you thinking?”

I grunt, uncomfortable. “There’s no one around. You don’t need to pretend anymore,” I tell him. “You don’t have to act like you’re actually worried about me.”

He scowls at me, his eyebrows drawn down in a dark V of warning. “There’s always someone to pretend for,” he replies. He breaks away to search the room, and for the first time I take it all in. The soft fabrics, the bare walls. I practically see the wheels in his mind working before he tugs a small hidden camera down from the corner. “Also, you weren’t with me on that stage. Make all the excuses you want but you tapped the fuck out. You might consider yourself some hotshot detective, but I can read people, too. I know when someone has disassociated.”

He turns the full force of his attention on me and it’s enough to make me squirm. Every part of me is hot in a completely different way than I’d been when he slid inside of me.

“I was fine,” I insist vehemently.

He tosses my ripped shirt at me to clean up his jizz.

“I’m not an idiot,” he snaps back as I furiously wipe myself. “When you agreed to sub with me, that indicates an agreement where both people understand the relationship.”

“We don’thavea relationship.”

The cresting wave of fear has finally receded and I’m back in my body, back on earth. I somehow feel both better and worse, in equal measures, than I did before we started.

“We do until this case is done. I don’t want you saying I took advantage of you, because we both went into this with eyes open but only one of us was present.”

I swipe a hand through my hair, incapable of arguing with him.
