That’s why I’m nervous. If anything happens to her then I won’t be a man anymore. I’ll be a beast with nothing but fangs and claws and thirst. I won’t stop killing until I get everything back under control.
Neither one of us can stop the press conference since it’s already called; I know that. Now I’ve got to hurry.
“I’ll lend you some clothes.” I press a brief kiss to the end of her nose before sliding my legs over the side of the bed and heading for the closet. “I like the thought of you wearing my things.”
“Oh, like some kind of brand?”
“No, mycuminside of you is a brand. I just think you’ll be adorable in clothes as big as a circus tent on you.”
She blushes sweetly and I release a long deep breath, trying to relax.
“Seems like you’re ready to make your escape. Where are you going in such a rush?” she asks.
“You’ve got crap to handle on your end, and I’ve got mine.” It’s a polite way of telling her to let me handle my business, and to trust me to do it.
I throw on a black-on-black ensemble. I’ll quickly check the club, to continue my research and try to find something of worth to lessen the blow of the press conference. If I can get ahead of the media attention then the boss will be appeased. Not happy, but there’s fuck-all I can do about his mood swings.
If Taney told Layla not to go back to the Velvet Underground, then that is exactly where I’ll look first.
Nothing about me screams avenging angel. I’m not about to do something drastic to right the wrongs of Taney’s death. But…she meant something to Layla. Something vital.
Whoever fucks with the detective fucks with me now. And I’m not sure which one of us will rain down the worst shit.
My clothes dwarf Layla. She holds her arms out to the side and the fabric folds around her. “You want me to go out like this?”
I grab her by the ass, dragging her against me and grinding my cock to her front. “You see what you do to me?”
“In these clothes.” She’s skeptical.
“In any clothes, but I really like you wearing nothing at all.”
She lifts on her toes and kisses my chin. “Keep talking like that and you’re the one who will need to be punished.”
I shoot her a wolf’s smile. “You’re welcome to try.”
“We’ll be here all day if I start, and neither of us has the time to spare.”
The clothes might be ridiculously big but she strides ahead confidently after I drop her off at her place. The Velvet Underground won't be open yet, not until tonight. Jade will be there regardless. She’s always there. Although there’s no chance in hell I’ll fuck her again, maybe we can come to some sort of different arrangement.
I call her cell while I’m outside and wait for her to answer. She does on the third ring.
“Gabriel.” My name is a soft purr on her lips. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Let me in.” There’s no need to tell her where I am. She’s got cameras all over the inside and outside of this place. She would have known about me from the moment I pulled up.
“Have you come to play with me again?” She lets out a string of laughter that feels like claws on my back for all the wrong reasons. The laughter says I had a taste of her and I’m back for more, a cat lapping at cream it can’t resist.
“I’m not interested in playing,” I growl. “Now open the goddamn door or I’m going to break it down and use your teeth for a new lock.”
Jade hangs up on me.
Fucking bitch. In every sense of the word she’s a fucking bitch and I’ve let her get away with acting the part because I enjoy her stage. It gives me the spotlight I need and an outlet on those dark days, those stressed days.
Rather than waiting for her to open the door, I stride forward and I slam the heel of my boot into it. The flimsy lock she has in place gives up the ghost after another kick and soon enough I’m striding down the hallway into the bowels of the Underground.
Jade is more than likely in her office so I take the steps two at a time. This door is open and she’s waiting behind her desk with a soft expression. Soft and kind as though she hadn’t just hung up on me.
“Gabriel,” she says with a smile.
