Page 88 of Love After Never

“A dig at me. Nice one.”

“I’ve had a few saved.” He doesn’t look particularly concerned at the murderous intent I shoot his way. “You never let anyone get a word in edgewise, Layla. You’re always too busy running your mouth. Do you have any idea how many times I thought about shutting you up, one way or another?” He tightens his grip on the gun. “I can finally see what those lips can do.”

Just fucking shoot me,then.

“They suck off better men than you,” I snap back.

His eyes take on a glint I know better than to ignore. “Did I strike a nerve with you? You’re confident for a woman about to suck off the end of a gun.” He opens his mouth to say more but the warehouse door bangs open.

My heart gives a thud when Gabriel strolls toward us. Relief is a living beast in my blood until his approach slows. He gives me the barest minimum acknowledgement before running an unimpressed look over Clint from head to toe.

What is he doing here?

“Speak,” he barks out. But not to me.

Clint shakes his head and straightens, fumbling with his gun all of a sudden. Gabriel has that effect on people. “She was about to uncover me and compromise the Black Market Syndicate. I, ah, I let the others know she’s here as well. I’m sorry if I overstepped, but since there’s a hit on her now anyway, I figured I’d save you the trouble and bring her here.”

His words snap me out of my shocked stupor. “Wait.” I pull against the ropes. “A fucking hit? There’s a hit out on me?”

Gabriel never told me.

He never said a word that I’m on his list. Betrayal replaces any ounce of joy at his arrival. I am dead now. And I know it.

He makes no move to untie me. “What did you tell them?” he asks Clint. “When you checked in?”

“That I’d called you in to take care of her.”

“Was she armed?”

“Of course.” Clint lets out a hiss of laughter. “To the teeth. I even took her shoes because I figure she’d stab an eye out with those toothpick heels.”

Clint pulls my gun out of the back of his pants and hands it off to Gabriel.

Who takes the gun, gives the piece a once-over, and then wastes no time before shooting Clint twice in the chest and once in the head. The world slows again as the rookie crumples, his knees smacking pavement and blood leaking from each bullet hole before he collapses on his back.

My mind spins.

Slowly Gabriel lowers the gun.

“You came for me. You actually fucking came for me.” I allow myself a small, hopeful grin.

He really is here to help. But he’s quiet, and he’s staring at the corpse. His lips are a thin bloodless line. Finally Gabriel moves toward me. The sound of cars approaching cuts off all but my pulse. Doors shut outside.

His eyes are cold. So much colder than I remember.

Even colder than the first time he had me tied up.

“Gabriel?”

His name is a plea. One I know will go unanswered when instead of loosening my bindings, he makes them tighter.

TWENTY-SIX

gabriel

Fucking Clint.

Fucking doped-up mole pussies who think they know better than anyone else. He sent out an alert to everyone and left me no maneuvering room. Left me no time to figure a way out of this bullshit. Layla and I are well and truly fucked now.
