“So you mean, that master of yours is another hacker, but you’ve never met him outside the...?”

Eden remained quiet, visibly annoyed by his question. Dante was impressed. So there was another hacker on the list of very hard people to find. For even someone like Eden, who he did believe to be Ghost, to struggle to find her own mentor, that master ought to be quite something.

“What about his partner?”

“His what?” Eden frowned.

“His Back Hacker. Like the crazy one for you. Do you have any idea who his Back Hacker was?”

“I don’t know... I don’t think he had one,” she sighed, suddenly standing up.

Eden walked to the window, ignoring his stare. She knew there were too many mysteries. More surrounding her master than herself. Eden wrapped her arms around herself, feeling a bit cold. The view was a bit too high from where she stood, and the edge was too close. It felt like she could just take one step and take off. The glass was so clean, it was almost invisible. It didn’t even show her reflection. The only way she knew it was there was because of the clean air she breathed and the lack of wind. Chicago certainly wasn’t so tame on those higher floors...

CHAPTER TEN

“Are you cold?”

Eden froze when she heard him stepping behind her. Strangely, her heartbeat accelerated a little, and a hot chill spread on her skin. Dante was coming toward her, but she didn’t move. She didn’t know how to react. Why? She had kept hundreds of men company before him, and yet... feeling him so close glued her feet to the ground. This time, Eden regretted she hadn’t put on those damn heels. She would have felt less small compared to him...

She thought he’d come to her side, but instead, she felt his presence right behind her, like a large shadow looming over her, so close she could almost feel the fabric of his shirt against her exposed back. Eden tried to take regular breaths, but it was hard to control her blushing. She was just glad he couldn’t see it.

“...Are you cold?” he asked again.

Eden didn’t know how to respond. What would he do if she said yes? He was close... too close for comfort. She wanted to look back, see what kind of face he was making. She could feel her chest going up and down exaggeratedly, barely containing her conflicted emotions. She felt like a little bird, trapped in front of a tiger. Quiet and immobile, not making noise before trying to eat her...

Suddenly, she felt him move, and Eden unfroze to glance over her shoulder to see what he was doing. To her surprise, a piece of fabric fell on her shoulders… his jacket? She touched the piece of clothing, but it was indeed the jacket he was wearing earlier. Had it been on his chair? She hadn’t noticed. Eden blushed, feeling a bit embarrassed for thinking too much.

“...Aren’t you a little tense?” he suddenly whispered in her ear.

As if to confirm his words, Eden jumped away from him, surprised. She brushed her cheek and ear, where his breath had touched her. Dante chuckled and took one step back, almost acting innocent.

“Still not trusting me, are you?” he said.

He walked back to the table, pouring himself another glass, but Eden was mad.

“Stop playing around with me. What do you want?!”

“Mh... Many things,” he answered, sitting back down.

He gently swirled the wine in his glass, staring at the pink color. Eden was annoyed. Mad at him and mad at herself too. She clenched her fists, trying hard to contain her emotions. She wasn’t acting like herself around him and she couldn’t figure out why. He was just fooling around with her, obviously.

“...Would you sing for me?”

His sudden question took her by surprise once again. Eden unclenched her fists, unsure. Sing? Was that a new game of his?

“Why?” she asked.

Dante chuckled.

“Just because I like your voice. It was quite pretty when you sang at that bar to entertain me.”

“I wasn’t entertaining you,” she retorted, a bit annoyed.

“I thought you were. I was entertained.”

She stopped replying, feeling like this would be nothing but stones thrown at a wall. He had decided she was entertaining him in particular at the time, and she wouldn’t fight that.

“...I don’t feel like singing,” she said, shrugging.
