He played a part.

The personable guy I went jogging with is gone.

The friend who picked up my favorite dessert is gone.

Like a whisper in my ears, my own voice chastises me.

I’ve just made a horrible mistake.

I followed the lion right into his own den.

Jekyll is back, and I’m on my own.

I don’t know where Jack is.

Just like last time.

I twitch as something snaps into place.

This has happened before.

I feel almost as though I’m watching everything unfold from a different room. I’m protected, distant, but I’m still controlling my actions.

“You d-don’t need to d-do this.” I don’t know what I’m referring to. Part of me feels like I’m moving automatically as I scramble to figure out my next move.

Logan reaches across his torso to roll up the sleeve on his opposite arm while keeping his eyes trained on me.

His face is cold.

Distant.

Then I notice he isn’t armed. There are no knives, and unless he has his piece in the back of his pants, he doesn’t have a gun either.

As he reaches over to roll up the sleeve on his other arm, I glance quickly around the room.

There’s nothing else here.

“Yes, Jessa. I do.” His voice is low and calm.

I can’t stop my heart from pounding out of my chest as my need to curl up in the fetal position builds.

But I can’t lie down.

I can’t allow myself to lose any ground.

I already know by the confidence in his movements that he is stronger and faster than I am.

This is another fight I’m going to lose.

CHAPTER28

LOGAN

The instant Jack challenged me in my office, I knew I would have to deceive my closest friend by tearing down the love of his life.

I didn’t come to this decision lightly. Hell, I was up half the night trying to come up with another solution. But there is no time for drawn-out strategies.

Three days. I can’t give Jack three days with Jessa. He knows Maxwell moves faster than that.
