My body trembles with the need to wrap myself around her and destroy anything that comes between us. And right now, that includes Logan.

As I reach the door, I hear it. Her scream is muffled, but even the soundproofing can’t hold back her cries.

Adrenaline surges through me as she screams my name over and over.

She’s trying to use her safe word.

He’s done it.

She’s broken, and she’s back where Maxwell put her all those years ago.

My world turns black. As I kick through the door, all I see in my tunnel vision is them.

Instantly, Logan drops the belt and steps back, leaving Jessa tied down on the bench with two bright red welts forming across her bare ass.

Rushing Logan, I don’t give him a chance to explain.

I fear myself right now, and I know, without doubt, if he says the wrong thing, I will kill him.

Pulling my arm back, I let loose on him with all the anger I wish I could aim at Maxwell, and Logan goes flying back against the wall.

The sound of Jessa retching her dinner onto the floor ends me. As she sobs in her binds, I take one last glance at Logan to make sure he isn’t moving.

I growl at him through clenched teeth. “Stay down.”

If he understands me so well, he’ll know how I feel, and he won’t move.

He doesn’t.

The color has drained from his face, and I know this is something that will haunt him for the rest of his days.

Without another word, I move to the table to put a hand on Jessa’s back. She jerks in her restraints as she yells out, “DON’T—”

But I won’t let her finish.

I won’t let her stay in her hell.

“Jessa, it’s me. Jack. Jessa, I’m here. You’re safe. You’re on the compound. I’m going to untie you.”

Her limbs pull taut against her restraints as she processes my words. Then she coughs and offers me a small nod.

I move quickly to her ankles, releasing her legs. Then I free her arms and neck from their binds.

She shivers, and I look to my hands for her sweater, but I don’t have it. I must have dropped it in my haze.

I scan the area for something to cover her with. Her robe sits crumpled on the floor, and I grab it, wrap it around her lower half, then scoop her into my arms.

Her breathing is deep and labored, and she is trembling uncontrollably in shock.

“If you remember, hold on to it, Jessa.” Logan speaks but keeps his head down, indicating he is no longer a threat. I don’t respond.

I look down at Jessa’s splotchy face. Her eyes are wide.

“You came for me, Jack. You saved me.” She’s looking at me in wonder, and it punches into my heart.

In this instant, I know. I know she remembers her pain now.

Clutching my shirt and shoving her face into my chest, she releases a guttural sob as I turn and carry her toward my room.
