Gary comes back from the bathroom, a spring in his step.

“Uh-oh. Why do you look so happy?” I ask.

Gary’s grin is contagious, and I can tell by his glossed-over eyes that he’s also feeling good. A tall man in tight jeans walks by and winks at Gary. Gary’s face turns bright red.

“You did not just fuck that guy in the bathroom, did you?”

His jaw drops, his mouth agape. “Is that really what you think of me?”

“You literally told me you did that last week.”

He rolls his eyes and giggles. “Well, this one, it was only a kiss and a quick feel.”

I shake my head and take a sip from my fourth vodka. “You have more game than anyone I know.”

“A high sex drive will get you a long way, girl. Are you jealous?”

“I’m not. I had sex last week. Thank you very much.”

“You hoe!” He playfully slaps my arm. “With who?”

Shit. He must be drunker than I thought if he doesn’t remember our conversation, because my fucking my boss is not something sober Gary would ever forget.

“I already told you. I slept with my boss.”

“Oh yeah. But we were on a different wave-length then.”

I just shake my head. He’s ridiculous.

He leans forward. “Now that the mood is right, how was it?”

How was it? It was fucking fantastic. But admitting that will give Gary all the fodder he needs to assume it will happen again, and he’d just give me endless shit about it. And he’d be right, of course. Fucking Jamie was definitely a mistake, and I hate that I loved it. Before I can respond, Gary’s gaze looks past me.

“Holy fuck. Isn’t that… no fucking way,” he says.

“What?” I ask, twisting my neck around to investigate Gary’s discovery.

Oh, fuck me. No way. This cannot be happening. What the fuck is Jamie doing here? And why is he walking right toward me, grinning like an idiot?

Jamie slides between my barstool and Gary’s. “Fancy seeing you here.”

I tense up my shoulders as I glance away.

Gary leans into the bar. “Jamie fucking Albrecht.”

Jamie blinks, turning toward Gary. “Sorry, do I know you?”

I’m fucked.

Gary’s lips press together in a fine line. “We went to high school together.” Gary’s tone is flat and Jamie doesn’t pick up on his attitude.

“Oh, right!” Jamie nods. He’s a terrible liar. He doesn’t recognize Gary at all. And I know that because Jamie didn’t even recognize me. “Sam, right?” Jamie continues.

“Gary.”

“Right, Gary. Sorry.”

As Jamie turns back toward me, Gary flashes me a private glance. My heart pounds as I feel the lie that has been protecting me from my past threaten to crumble around me.
