I pause, wiping the sweat from my brow.

She cocks her head. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," I nod and thrust myself deeper into her again, but I'm not feeling it anymore, not like I was before. Her smiling face takes my attention, and all I want to do is kiss her again. I want to get to know her, to spend time with her.

I begin to deflate inside her. Fuck.

She touches my cheek and raises her lips to mine, but an unsettling sensation passes through me. A discomfort. I lean back.

Her eyes search mine. "Jamie? Are you okay?"

My erection is completely gone. I pause on top of her and then slowly remove myself, rolling over onto my back.

She freezes beside me, her eyes wide.

What the fuck is wrong with me? I press my hand against my forehead as I stare at the light, a tension rising between us. I clear my throat. "I'm sorry, Lara."

"N-no," she stutters. "It's fine."

This is far from fine. I glance at her and she's also staring up at the ceiling, not wanting to look at me. I want to crawl out of my skin.

I sit up. "I'm sorry."

She tugs at her ear. "It's okay, Jamie."

I avoid her gaze. "No, I mean, I'm sorry. I forgot I had an appointment tonight."

The lie is so obvious, I'm sure she can see right through it.

"Oh. Okay."

She gets up from the cot.

"Yeah, I need to get ready."

"Right." She nods. "I'll head home, then."

She's dressed in thirty seconds and makes a bee-line for the door.

"Lara?" She pauses and turns, her hand on the door handle and an expectant look in her eyes.

"See you for your shift tomorrow?"

Her shoulders slump. "Yeah. I'll be here."

I wait until I hear the front doors close before I collapse backward onto the cot, with no comprehension of what the hell just happened.

Chapter 14

Lara

Inthebackroomof Eden's Monday night, I throw my things in my locker and pause to look at my phone. Gary hasn’t answered any of my texts since Saturday, and I can't shake the nagging uneasiness I’m feeling.

I lied to him about who my boss was because I didn't think I'd be at Eden's long enough for it to matter. And when I took Jamie’s promotion, I just didn’t think about telling Gary.

Biting my thumbnail, I stare into the gray abyss in front of me, which is my locker, not focusing on anything in particular.

After last night, did I even want it to happen again?
