The bed shifts as Ty rolls to the edge of the bed and slides open the drawer of the nightstand. He reaches in and pulls out a tiny package from the nightstand and tears it open.
“Best to be safe,” he says, holding up for me to see what must be a condom. Not that I’ve ever seen one in person, but everybody knows what they are.
“Yes, definitely,” I chuckle, with a hitch in my voice. “Best to be safe.” Wow. Is this actually safe? I want him so badly, but tonight was supposed to go much differently than this. I recall the conversation with Pauline:The safety net, she said. But then there werethe argumentswith her boyfriend. And what about school? And Cole? And Pauline again:What’s the point? Life is for living, she had said. And then there’s Mom:Remember to take time for yourself.
“Ready?” Tyson breaks my thoughts in the nick of time.

The gesture warms me, but I can’t let him do that. “No, this is my problem.” I roll off the bed and pull on my clothes.
“What are you going to tell him?” Tyson pulls on his jeans, his face wrinkled with worry.
Dressed, I cross the space between us and kiss him softly. “I don’t think anything, not yet. I’m just going to go. I’m sorry.”
Before he can protest, I hurry down the stairs. My stomach flips when I see Cole at the bottom, his eyes darting from me to Tyson standing shirtless behind me on the stairs. Tears prickle in my eyes at the confusion in Cole’s face.
“I’m sorry, I can’t.” I brush past Cole and out the door, into the cold, snowy darkness.
