We sit down on the sofa together, cuddling closely. “And what would this news be?”

“How would you like to go back to Hawaii for our anniversary?”

“Hawaii? Again?” I perk up. Our honeymoon was a blast, and it wasn’t just us enjoying one another’s bodies in the hotel room. We got to see a lot of sights, enjoyed a lot of interesting food, learned a lot of history and got matching tans.

“It’s booked. My gift to you, my beautiful wife.” He kisses me.

I giggle. “You always take such good care of me. We’re taking the twins, I assume?”

“I thought you’d like some time just the two of us. So I arranged for Cash and Cassidy to take the boys. They’ll gladly take care of them for us for our two weeks away.”

“You just think of everything, don’t you?” He’s never stopped surprising me. For as much of a roughneck as he claimed to be before we married, he’s been the absolute pinnacle of a considerate husband and father, always putting everyone before himself. He was always good enough for me, bad boy or not. “This can double as our babymoon, you know.”

He cocks an eyebrow. “The fuck is a babymoon?”

“It’s a trip that couples take before their child is born. One last hurrah before the chaos of dealing with a newborn.”

He stares at me, the dots connecting in his head. I’ve known for a few days, but I wanted to tell him in a special way. This seems more than special enough, I reckon.

“You’re telling me... you’re pregnant? Again?”

I nod.

“We already have twins,” he says, overwhelmed. “But, well... I guess there’s always room for more, isn’t there?”

“I knew you’d rise to the challenge, Carter. You always will.”

“As long as you’re by my side, Cadence, you can have as many babies as you want. Twins, triplets, quadruplets, whatever.”

I cackle. “I think it’s just one this time, but glad to see you’re on board.”

He sweeps me off my feet and into his arms, carrying me through the house. “You’re the woman of my dreams. I love you more than life itself, babe.”

Carter has always been a man of action. As he carries me to our room to make sweet love, I just smile. A beautiful future with him awaits me. Be it here in Burly or in Hawaii, my life is only going to get better from here.

And every time I think of Carter hesitating to have me all those years ago, I just laugh. The possibility of him never asking me out, the idea of us not being together?

What a tragedy that would have been.
