“Fuck off!” I lunge at him again but Summer and others hold me back.

“I’ll remember that when I’m fucking Marlene tonight. We’re still together, you know? Aftertenyears. And it’s still as good as the first day I fucked her in your car when you asked me to take her home. Bastard though I may be, at least I know how to have andkeepa woman.” He turns to Summer. “Remember the name, baby. Tommy Barrett.”

He shakes off the man holding him back and walks away. I am pleased to see him limp slightly, which tells me some of my kicks found their mark.

“Lucan?”

I look down at Summer. Then look at the small crowd staring at me.

“Let’s go.”

I help her into the car and we are soon off.”

“Lucan, you need some attention. How about we go back to the hotel and order room service?”

“I don’t want Ryan to see me like this.”

“Nicole and Susan are taking care of him. I just need to call them and let them know to keep him a little bit longer.”

“I feel badly for us both neglecting him like this. This trip was for him as well.”

“Nicole and Susan are good. He has not had a meltdown yet. I trust them.” She places a gentle hand on my sore cheek and I wince.

“Let me take care of you, Lucan. I’ll get you cleaned up and we’ll order lunch from room service. Okay?”

I search her eyes and find myself weakening. She is so kind, caring, giving, selfless. I nod.

“Okay.”

Chapter Eleven

Summer

Wehaveanemergency. Please keep Ryan a little longer this afternoon. I will call you when we are ready for him to come up.

I usher Lucan into the penthouse elevator quickly and away from prying eyes. I grip his hand, taking comfort in him squeezing my fingers in return. As soon as we get to the suite, I turn him toward his room.

“Let me call room service and then tend to you.”

I place a quick order for sandwiches and juice before going to the room to find him standing by the window.

“Sit.”

I place him on the edge of the bed and remove his jacket. I then loosen his tie and undo the first few buttons of his shirt.

“Let me know if anything hurts.”

I skim over his torso, pressing into his ribs lightly. I move my hands upward, pressing as I go. When I get to his shoulder, he winces. Gently, I pull the shirt off his shoulder and find a slightly swollen area. I touch it again and he reacts. I remove his shirt completely.

I leave him just long enough to run to my room and rummage through my luggage for my first aid kit to find the tube of cream I’m looking for.

“This is not going to hurt. It will help to numb the area and reduce the swelling.”

“Okay.”

I avoid his eyes as I apply the ointment. “Do you want to talk about it?”

He remains silent.
