“Forever is a very long time.”
“I know. But that’s what I want. Unfortunately, we cannot always have what we want.”
I lower my eyes as a cold feeling comes over me. The enormity of what we have just done begins to dawn on me. But it is as though he can read my mind.
“Look at me, Summer.”
I shake my head slightly.
“Look at me.”
I take a deep breath and my eyes meet his. His gaze is searching.
“I don’t regret this. And neither should you.”
“But—”
He places a finger on my lips to silence me. “No regrets. I wanted this. And so did you. If you didn’t, we wouldn’t be here right now. We’re both adults.”
“But Ryan—”
“Ryan changes nothing. Okay?”
I take a few moments before I finally nod. “Okay.”
“Good.” He leans down and kisses my neck again. It tickles slightly and I giggle. He looks up and smiles.
“I really don’t want this moment to end, Summer. But you’re about to feel a rumbling that has more to do with hunger than sex. We haven’t had lunch yet.”
Reluctantly, he rolls away from me.
“Don’t move.”
I watch as he goes to the bathroom and returns with a washcloth and one of the hotel robes. I am touched by the tenderness with which he tends to me before wrapping the robe around me.
We eat the sandwiches room service had brought up earlier. I push him into the shower and do the same in my room. When I go back to his room, he is dressed in sweats and a muscle shirt. I reach for the ointment from the first aid kit once more.
“Your shoulder is going to be black and blue for a while, and your eye is going to be a bit swollen as well. Hold still.”
I apply the ointment once again and he winces. I chuckle.
“You’re a very poor patient, you know? Where was all of this wincing an hour ago when you were—” My cheeks grow warm and he laughs.
“Where there’s pleasure, I’ll grin and bear any pain.” His hands wrap around my waist as he pulls me close. “And with you, there will always be pleasure.”
I feel as though I am as red as a beetroot. He laughs again and kisses me softly.
“Finish playing doctor with me and have the girls bring Ryan up. I think we’ll order room service tonight. We need our rest.”
He kisses me once more before releasing me. We both go to the main area and he settles in a corner with his laptop while I make a few calls. When Ryan arrives, I am ready to tend to him. He makes a beeline for Lucan who scoops him into his arms.
“Daddy! I had the best time with sergeant Nicole and corporal Susan! Do you like the names I gave them? I love my soldiers.” He frowns as he looks at Lucan’s face and shoulder. “Daddy? Are you hurt?”
“Is everything okay, Mr. Forbes?” Nicole asks with concern. “We hope you didn’t slip in the shower or something. We have a doctor on call.” She gives Lucan a strange look, then looks at me and after she exchanges looks with Susan and I frown.
“I’m fine. This happened off site. Thank you.” He pulls out his wallet.
“Still. You’re a guest here. If you need medical attention—”
