“You’ve made a couple of mistakes,” he points out, “but you have the tenacity. The drive. And your little sister…” He shrugs. “Well, she’s the perfect motivator, isn’t she?”

I lurch forward, grabbing Luka up by the collar. He winces, his injury no doubt agitated, but I don’t care.

“Leave my sister out of this,” I hiss in his face.

“I like this version of you much better than Willa,” he murmurs, eyes dark with lust. “It’s a shame we never got around to sleeping together. I bet you’re a firecracker in bed.”

I release him, trying desperately to control my temper. “You’re an asshole,” I grumble.

“Don’t knock it until you try it, Agent Harper.”

I anxiously strum my fingers on the table. That look in his eyes… God, it’s enough to drive me wild. There’s something almost unhinged about him. Brimming with confidence, yet unpredictable and crazy. A mad genius. His presence is intoxicating. Just being near him is enough to make my skin crackle with electricity. I’m on edge, oddly eager to see what he does next.

“You’d need something valuable to exchange for a safehouse,” I tell him. “We don’t hand those out for just anybody.”

Luka works his jaw, opening and closing it so his joint clicks. The room is small and quiet; I can hear it popping from across the table.

“I can give you justice.”

“Quit being so cryptic.”

“I don’t know. My brothers might kill me if I tell you anything else. Those men who came after me… Let’s just say it’s a family dispute.”

“Give it to me straight, Mr. Antonov.”

He’s quiet for a long time. Too long. The silence is so thick I feel even a knife wouldn’t be able to slice through it.

“Konstantin Antonov, Edvard Levitksy, and Violetta Salkov. The Trinity, or so they’ve started calling themselves. I think. It’s pretentious, if you ask me—”

“Are these names supposed to mean something to me?”

“They might. Look them up, if you don’t believe me.”

I rise from my seat slowly. “I will. Don’t move.”

“Or what, Agent Harper?”

Gritting my teeth, I hold his gaze, unwavering. “Or I’ll shoot you between the eyes.”

Luka chuckles. “Promises, promises.”
