‘None of that was real’ my ass.

“Luka…”

“Yeah?”

“You need to get off. They’ll see us on the cameras.”

“Cameras?” I echo.

Her lips stretch into a coy smile. “You didn’t think we’d only be surveilling the outside of the safehouse, did you?”

I linger, struggling to find the strength to leave. The gravity between us, this heavy pull… What I wouldn’t give to kiss her right now. But if she’s telling the truth about the cameras—and I suspect she is—then I’ve already put us in a compromising position. Not that I care about what her upper ups might think. And I certainly don’t give a shit if the rest of her team sees us like this. But if it means she could get in trouble…

With a heavy sigh, I pull away and rise to my feet. When I offer her my hand, I’m surprised when she takes it. Even the simple touch of her soft palm against mine makes my body overheat. I have no earthly idea why someone like Dani could have this much of an effect on me.

“I need to go,” she says, much to my disappointment. Dani smooths the non-existent wrinkles on the front of her shirt. “I need more information on the Trinity. According to the files I’ve been able to pull up, they’ve all been MIA for several years. Why are they turning up now?”

“You’re not going to like my answer.”

“Just tell me, Luka. The more I have to go off of, the sooner I’ll likely be able to find them and stop them before they get to you.”

“I want a laptop,” I say. “In exchange for what I know.”

She gives me an annoyed glare. “This is for your benefit, not mine. And besides, knowing you, you’ll cause too much damage with a laptop at your disposal.”

“You expect me to sit in this house for days, weeks, maybe even months on end with nothing to keep me entertained? I’m pretty sure that classifies as cruel and unusual punishment.”

Dani sighs. “Fine, I’ll get you a laptop. Nowtalk. Tell me more about this Pit you mentioned.”

I chew on the inside of my cheek. “It’s in a remote location. Deep underground, hence, the name. Manned by 24/7 security. It’s supposed to be inescapable.”

“And the three of them—Konstantin, Levitsky, and Salkov—they were all in the same place. Would it have been possible for them to communicate with one another? Team up?”

I shake my head. “Impossible.”

“Really? Because I have a hard time believing three of your family’s enemies randomly decided to come after you at the exact same time. Which begs another question, why you specifically?”

“I don’t know.”

“Luka—”

“I’m telling you the truth, Dani. I don’t know. But I won’t stop until I find out.”

Three hard knocks sound at the backdoor of the safehouse. Then comes the creak of rusty hinges, followed by hard footfalls down the hall. A man rounds the corner, the one I recognize from Matianna.

“Agent Harper,” he says.

She nods in greeting. “Gomez.”

“Everything’s set up.”

“Patrols?” Dani asks, suddenly all business. I really like seeing her at work. Her face is serious and hard, her voice rigid and dropped into her chest.

“We’ve got a car parked a block from here. Two armed agents keeping a lookout.”

“Have them switch out every eight hours.”

“You got it.” Gomez gives me the side eye, puffing out his chest like some sort of territorial bear, but it’s unconvincing.
