The sheer force of my confession, even when spoken quietly, makes my eardrums ring. I can’t remember the last time I needed someone as badly as I do Luka. It’s crazy. It’s incomprehensible. And yet I’m starting to realize in this big, chaotic world of ours, he’s the only one I truly feel safe with. I don’t care what happens next so long as I have him by my side.

The thought of losing him tears me up. I’ve already lost so much. My parents, my partner, my sense of safety. Everything right now feels hopeless, but as long as I’m with him, I know I won’t fall apart.

“Come here,” he mutters softly. “I’ve got you, Dani. We’ve got each other.”

My senses are heightened in the dark. Without sight, I have to rely on touch, taste, smell and sound.

His rough hands caress my body, taking in every inch with slow appreciation. I lose myself in the taste of his tongue, in the pillow softness of his lips. I breathe him in, concentrating on the earthy remnants of his cologne. The smell sends me back to the first time we met, the day I literally ran into him. Things were complicated back then, but in comparison to the nightmare scenario we’re trapped in, it was all so simple.

A feverish hunger takes hold. I rake my fingers through his hair, allowing them to slip down to his neck and shoulders. His hands move quickly between us, pushing away the fabric of our clothing. It takes a moment for me to push down my pants and underwear, and it sounds like he struggles with his belt and zipper, but before long, I have Luka right where I want him—snug between my thighs.

He moves without urgency, rolling his hips with the utmost care. We’re unhurried, savoring every second available to us. Neither of us knows what the future holds. A month from now, a week, even a couple of hours… Our predicament could go from bad to worse in the blink of an eye, which is why we won’t be rushed. This connection is on our terms.

Pleasure is a slow build, but I don’t mind in the slightest. I’ve never felt closer to anyone in my entire life.

When bliss finds me, it’s intensified by the dark and the way Luka wraps me up so tight. When he kisses my cheeks and murmurs sweet nothings against my ear, I can almost pretend we’re somewhere safe and sunny and not in this bottomless hell hole.

“We’re going to get out of here,” he promises. “You and me. I promise you, Dani.”

His words reverberate within me, soaking into my bones. I believe him without a doubt.

Chapter 25

Luka

Breakfast is a single tray of cut fruit, a couple pieces of buttered toast, and a whole glass of water. There are no utensils for us to pocket, but the real problem I have isn’t the fact that the sliced apples look rotten, that the toast clearly has bite marks along the edges, or that the water tastes heavily of chemicals.

They bring Dani nothing. Naturally, I give her half of everything.

My favorite Dynamic Duo stands at our doorway, blocking out most of the hallway light. Still, it’s no small wonder to finally be able to see again after so long in the dark. My retinas burn, but I don’t care. I can’t wait to finally see the sun again—provided we get out of here alive.

“That’s not for her,” Jerome snaps.

“Fuck you,” I hiss. “Next time, you bring her something to eat.”

Calvin crosses his arms over his chest. “Or what?”

“Or I’ll shove my fist down your fucking throat.”

Dani places her hand on my knee. “Calm down, Luka.”

Jerome snickers. “That’s right. Keep your bitch in his place.”

Were I not so concerned about Dani’s safety, I’d probably have flown off the handle by now. I’m past the point of recklessness. If I didn’t have her well-being to consider, I would have thrown caution to the wind and bashed these idiots over the head with my keyboard. Hell, I’mstilltempted to do it if they keep pushing my buttons.

“Hurry up,” Jerome says, stepping into our cell to grab me by the upper arm. He drags me to my feet. “Let’s go. We’re burning daylight.”

“What time is it?” Dani asks innocently.

Calvin glances down at his wristwatch. “A little after seven—”

“Shut up!” Jerome snaps.

“What? It’s not like it’ll do any harm to know.”

Jerome rolls his eyes, dragging me along with him. “You really get on my nerves sometimes, you know that, Cal?”

I manage to cast one last look at Dani before Calvin shuts the door on her, locking everything up tight. It takes all my strength to take a step forward, but the sooner I finish the day’s work, the sooner I can get back to her. Besides, I’ve been given a very important task. This isn’t some mindless wander down the hall. I’m looking for anything useful, namely security cameras, other guards, and—most important of all—a way out.
