And right now, they’re teetering dangerously close to the thin line.

With a shaky hand, I raise my gun and point it at Luka. I’ve never seen him more crestfallen.

“Dani…”

“Put the gun down, Luka. All of you, drop your weapons.Now.”

From on his knees, Konstantin laughs. Maniacal. Unhinged. “Falling apart already? How delicious.”

“Shut up!” Mikhail snaps.

Luka grits his teeth. “Dani—”

“Drop it.”

Pyotr turns, aiming his weapon at me. “For fuck’s sake—”

“Stop!” Luka shouts at his brother. “Don’t you fucking point that at her!”

We devolve into anarchy, our own alliance crumbling before my very eyes. What did I expect? It was naive of me to think I could uphold justice and help the Antonov Bratva seek their revenge at the same time.

Why did I have to fall in love with a criminal?

We’re in a standoff, guns pointed in every given direction; I can no longer tell who the real enemy is. At this rate, we’re all going to freeze to death as the Alaskan temperatures plummet. Someonehasto budge, but it’s not going to be me.

Luka turns to his brothers. “Put your guns away.”

Dimitri frowns. “What?”

“Just do it.” His voice is raw and thick. When he returns his gaze to me, I keep my gun trained on him. “What’s going to happen to them if we give The Trinity to you?”

Mikhail looks like he’s about to blow a blood vessel. “Luka.”

“I’m going to call my boss,” I explain. “I’ll have them secured and arrested. We’re equipped to ensure they’ll never get out. Escape is impossible. They will be held accountable for their crimes.”

“And what about us?” Dimitri asks.

I shrug. “If you hand The Trinity to me, I’ll forget you were here. You can all walk away. Disappear. Be done with this nonsense.”

Pyotr shakes his head. “It’s not that easy. The Feds will want to know what you were doing out here. You couldn’t have done this without help.”

“I’ll come up with something,” I insist. “But I’ll leave the four of you out of it. You’ll be in the clear.”

“You’d really keep us from our revenge?” Luka asks, words barely above a whisper. “After everything they did to us?”

“If it means keeping your hands clean and stopping you from debasing yourself, then yes.” I plead with him with my eyes. “Don’t go this way, Luka. Killing them isn’t the answer. Don’t stoop down to their level.”

I feel sick. I can’t stop trembling. My stomach flips. Iknowdeep down, Luka is a good man. Murdering his uncle and the others isn’t actually what he wants, but he’s too blinded by his own rage to see it.

Just when I think things can’t get any more tense, Luka turns to his eldest brother. “Do as she says.”

The Antonov brothers’ hesitation is clear to see, but they do lower their weapons. I don’t think I’ve ever seen four grown men look more pissed. Without a word, Mikhail, Dimitri, and Pyotr stomp off. Luka remains behind, but only for a moment. His mouth opens like he wants to say something, but he produces no sound. What can he say? What canIsay?

Nothing.

With this decision, our reunion is cut short.

Luka turns on his heels and follows his brothers into the night. The tiny voice in the back of my head screams at me to go after him, to not let him get away. I love him too much to see this tear us apart…
