Luka grimaces. “It sounds bad when you say it like that, but it was the only way I could…” He takes a deep breath. “It was the only way I could check up on you. To make sure you were okay.”

A shiver passes through me. Has he been thinking about me this whole time?

“I thought you’d be mad at me,” I murmur.

“Why would I be mad at you?”

“Because I meddled in your family’s affairs. I stopped you and your brothers from getting revenge.” My eyes sting with the threat of tears, the memory of that night swimming through my head. “You were soangry—”

Luka shakes his head. “No, Dani, I wasn’t. I was scared.”

“You were?”

“I’m glad you stepped in. You were right. It would have been a mistake to stoop down to their level. I was just afraid, no matter what, I’d end up losing you. I never should have walked away, but I didn’t know how to turn away from my brothers either. Tensions were running high that night. I don’t think I would have been able to make the right decision, so it’s a good thing you did what you did.”

My bottom lip trembles. “Where did you all go? I tried keeping tabs, asked a bunch of informants, but…”

Luka arches a brow, the corner of his lip quirking up into a grin. “You tried to find me?”

“Ofcourse. I was so worried, Luka. I thought I’d never see you again, when all I want is to tell you I love you and want you in my life. And I know that’s going to be hard because of what we do for a living, but…”

“You love me?” he asks softly.

“More than anything.”

“And you want me in your life?”

I nod, a tear slipping down my cheek. I reach between us and take his hand, gently guiding it to my belly. The warmth of his palm is a salve over my frayed nerves. “I want you inbothof our lives.”

His smile is brighter than the sun. “When did you find out?” he asks me. He doesn’t sound mad in the slightest, and for that, I’m eternally thankful.

“When I was in the hospital. There wasn’t a good time to tell you, and then we… went different ways.”

“I’m here,” he says like a promise. “I’m here, and I’m never leaving again.”

“But what about your brothers?”

“They don’t need me anymore. I’m finally free.”

I stare at him in disbelief. “And they let you go?”

Luka nods. “When I told them about your condition, they were pretty quick to give me their blessing. Not that I needed it to start with. I was going to come to you regardless. But yes. We have nothing to worry about anymore.”

“So we can be together?” I ask, wheezy and practically vibrating out of my skin.

“That’s right.”

“Luka,kiss m—”

I don’t get the chance to finish my sentence. Luka claims my lips with a ferocious hunger, his tongue sweeping over mine in a bout for dominance. His touches, however, stand in stark contrast. His hands are all things loving, gentle, and cautious.

We move toward my bed together, sinking down onto the mattress. A funny thought pops into my head, making me laugh.

“What?” he asks, his arms braced on either side of me.

“You’re the love of my life, but this is the first time I’ve actually let you sleep in my bed. Talk about unconventional.”

Luka smirks. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
