Jimmy: How did you sleep?
Me: Like a rock. I just woke up
Jimmy: I didn’t know rocks slept
Me: Oh yeah, they are champions at it. That’s why you never see them move
Me: They’re always sleeping
Jimmy: Lol, is that so?
Me: It is.
Me: Thank you for giving me those two rooms to do whatever with
Jimmy: No problem. Sometimes I think I have more space than I know what to do with
Me: It is a really big place
Me: Would you mind if I put my touch on things outside of my two rooms?
Jimmy: What do you mean?
I wasn’t sure how to say what I wanted to say without it coming out as an insult— because I really didn’t mean it as one. The smell of coffee filled my nose, and I busied myself fixing my cup as I tried to figure out how to word it.
Me: Well… I mean no offense
Jimmy: None taken…
Me: Your place is very hospital or doctor’s office chic
Jimmy: Ah
Me: I was hoping maybe I could paint the walls another color?
Me: Put up some of my artwork around the house?
Me: Eventually get furniture with a little more warmth to it?
There was a long pause where Jimmy didn’t text, but I also knew he was at work. It didn’t help my nerves, though, because I was worried I had offended him or something. What if he felt like I was insulting his taste in decor? What if I was being too mean or judgmental?
I slowly sipped my coffee while sitting at the kitchen island. My stomach growled, and suddenly I remembered there was nothing except for creamer in the fridge. I was going to have to venture out to get food, or I could get delivery. I had a feeling I was going to go for the latter, mainly for sake of focus. I had almost no focus before eating breakfast. That and I wasn’t sure what was nearby or open. One of these days, I would go out wandering the neighborhood on an adventure, but that day was not today. I had to establish a home base first and unpack.
I ordered from a coffee shop down the street, and the app said it would arrive in about twenty minutes. So I refilled my coffee and headed up to the spare rooms to start brainstorming as to what I wanted them to be. I was standing in the doorway of the first room, wondering what it could be when my phone’s notification tone went off.
Jimmy: The place came furnished. The only things I bought were the couch, the TV, and the bed. I also had the main bathroom renovated a few months ago.
Jimmy: Please, absolutely put your mark on it. Buy what you want or need
Me: Well, it won’t be an all-at-once thing.
Jimmy: That’s fine.
Me: Also, are you against food in your refrigerator?
Jimmy: No, why?
Me: Because it’s empty
