The mansion had an eerie feel to it—as if there were secrets lurking around every corner. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were dead bodies hidden in the walls. It was unsettling, but I pushed those thoughts aside and continued on my way.

As I reached the foyer, I saw James standing there, his arms crossed in front of his chest. He had a stern expression on his face. I had no desire at that moment to deal with the consequences of the previous night, but I continued towards him as he acknowledged me with a nod.

"Come to the back," his tone was firm, not that there had ever been a day that he was lenient. He took his difficult position very seriously.

I followed him to the other end of the house where he opened a heavy metal door that led to a dark room. I could barely see what was inside, but I knew it had to be something important.

He pulled out a large, heavy carton and placed it on a nearby table.

"You're delivering this," he said, pointing to the package. "It needs to be there at exactly 7 a.m."

I didn't know what was inside the package, but I was sure it was something illegal. I could feel my heart racing as I thought about the potential consequences if I were to be caught. But James said nothing—no warning, nothing. He just handed me the package and texted me the address.

As I walked back to my car toting the heavy carton in my arms, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had become part of something bigger than just a simple driver. Part of me knew James was either challenging me or trying to take me out, and the thought of either made my stomach hurt. James had never liked me, and he would do anything to get me out of there. Now after the whole incident with Laura, he was definitely going to make a fuss.

But right now, all I knew was that I had to deliver the package on time no matter what, and I had to be careful.

On the way, I pulled over in front of a park under a large oak tree and stepped out, feeling the cool breeze on my face. The park was quiet, almost eerily so, with no one around except for a few birds chirping in the distance. I walked around the car to the passenger side, opened the door, and reached down for the package. I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease wash over me.

As I held the package, my mind raced with thoughts of what could be inside. Was it something illegal? Was I putting myself and my daughter in danger by transporting it? I had no clue, and it made me feel even more stressed.

I took a deep breath and decided to take a closer look at the package, which was tightly sealed. I ran my eyes over all the surfaces, searching for clues about what could be inside. But there was nothing—no labels, no markings, no indications of what was inside. It was a complete mystery.

I sighed and got back into the car, feeling more anxious than ever. The drive had been long and grueling, and it seemed like every minute was dragging on forever. The scenery outside my car window was monotonous, with nothing but empty roads and deserted buildings for miles.

I glanced at my watch and realized with a start that I had been on the road for over an hour, yet I was still only halfway there. The thought of having to spend another hour in the car filled me with dread.

As I drove on, I couldn't help but think about the consequences of my actions. Getting caught with this package could mean the end of everything for my family and me. I had worked hard to build a life for us, and I couldn't let it all go to waste.

Then my mind wandered to Laura. I had hoped that I would see her again today, but maybe Laura wasn't the best option for me around there. I didn’t want to hurt her. I just needed something from her, but I was too confused to know what I wanted right now.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing. It was James, and I felt a sense of dread wash over me. I knew he was expecting me to deliver the package soon.

I picked up the phone and tried to sound calm, but my voice shook slightly.

"Hey, James. What's up?"

"Where are you?" he demanded.

"I'm on my way," I replied, trying to keep my tone even.

"Well, hurry up," he snapped, “It’s already past seven.”

I hung up and sighed, feeling even more stressed than before. The pressure was mounting, and I knew I had to focus if I wanted to get through this.

I was going to have to talk this out with the boss. I wanted to know what exactly my role was now and why his driver had been delivering packages for days. I deserved to know if I was being asked to step up in the organization to see if it was in alliance with my aims.

Upon arriving at the destination, I saw a tough-looking Latino guy standing outside. His broad shoulders, thick arms, and stern expression made him seem like the kind of person who didn't take kindly to strangers. I started to wonder what the consequences would be for arriving nearly an hour late. However, as I got closer, he simply gave me a small nod and reached out his hand to collect the package from me.

I handed over the package with a sense of relief, knowing that my mission was accomplished. The guy quickly inspected the package's contents, ensuring everything was in order. Satisfied with what he saw, he gave me a curt nod and motioned for me to leave. I hesitated momentarily, wondering if there was anything else I needed to do. He gave me a stern look that clearly conveyed that my job was done and I needed to leave.

As I walked away, I couldn't help but feel a sense of elation. I had been so worried about this delivery, but it had gone smoothly. I checked my watch and saw that it was exactly eight in the morning. I grinned to myself, realizing that I had the entire day ahead of me to relax and spend time with my daughter. I texted James to inform him that the job was done and that I was heading home.

As I walked over to Mrs. Tom's house, I could hear the sound of children playing and laughing in the distance.

I approached the house, and I saw Amanda running toward me with a big smile on her face. I knelt down and caught her as she hugged me tightly. Her little arms wrapped around my neck, and I could feel her warmth and love.

"Daddy!" she squealed with excitement. "I missed you so much!"
