"I'm on my way," I said, my voice tinged with amusement.

"You'll be at my apartment tonight, right?" she asked, her tone suggestive.

"Of course," I replied, my chuckle echoing through the line as the call ended.

I swore Laura made me want to breathe her every time. I loved how capable she was. I loved how caring she was, and I loved how she loved me and my daughter. I loved that I loved her.

It was just me and my thoughts now. I couldn’t be lying to myself. I did not have to chase the void. I loved Laura. I loved her like I wanted her to live the rest of my life with me. I was trying to pinpoint exactly when I had started feeling this way.

Lost in my thoughts, I looked at my watch and saw that it was already 3 p.m. I knew that I had to meet with my boss soon, and I refused to let fear get in the way.

As I pulled up to the mansion, a group of guys were holding fort outside. They informed me that the boss had not come in all day, so I made the decision to head to his house.

I had been to my boss's house several times, mostly to drop off packages for Laura, but this time was different. The security guard at the gate did a thorough check before allowing me entry, which left me with a sense of unease. I made my way through the massive compound, suddenly feeling like an outsider in this community. The guard had put a call through to my boss's residence to notify them that I was there. So my visit wasn’t a surprise anymore.

Slightly panicking, I hurried through the streets and pulled over at the gate in front of my boss’s house. Finding the gate unlocked, I navigated my way to the front door and into the house. As closed the front door behind me, I could feel the weight of the situation settling in. I knew that I had to be strong, that I had to confront my boss, tell him the truth, and regain control of my life. But as I stood there, waiting for my boss to appear, I felt a sense of dread creeping up on me. I took a deep breath and tried to center myself, knowing that I couldn't let fear get the best of me.

I walked over to the living room area and decided to make myself at home. The soft cushion of the armchair enveloped my body, and I sunk into it, enjoying the plush comfort. The subtle scent of lavender lingered in the air, and the room was tastefully decorated with elegant furniture, fine art pieces, and intricate rugs. I could hear the muffled sound of clanging pots and pans coming from the kitchen, indicating someone’s presence.

The domestic worker, a kindly old lady, emerged from the kitchen and informed me that the chef would be arriving shortly to take my order. I tried to protest, insisting that I hadn’t come for dinner, but she insisted, with a gentle smile on her face, that it was no trouble at all.

As I waited, I glanced around the room, taking in the ornate details and intricate patterns. A few moments later, my boss strolled into the room, looking polished and professional as always. He took a seat on the perfectly cream-colored leather couch across from me that was complemented by a rich mahogany coffee table between us.

"It must be serious for you to come all the way over here. What do you have to say, Anthony?" he asked with the usual expression.

"Sir… Laura and I are going out." I got straight to the point.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting to happen, but I was expecting a reaction of some kind, and… nothing. My boss's facial expression did not change. I thought maybe he was daring me to repeat it.

"Laura and I have been dating for only a short time, sir, but I felt that it was right to let you know what was going on." I looked up at my boss, but still no reaction. That genuinely got me scared.

"Anthony, I heard you. You just said you and Laura are dating, I heard. I appreciate you telling me, Anthony," he said.

Still not sure of what was going on, I continued.

"I have one more thing to say, sir. James has been threatening me. He wants me dead."

This time I saw him genuinely interested in what I had to say.

He sat up and looked straight at me. "How do you know that?"

"I heard from a source he was arranging for me to die the day I was supposed to perform the first task for you."

"Anthony, James has been with me for a long time. He doesn't act irrationally. Do you have any evidence to prove this?" he said.

I stared long at him. I would never put someone in danger, especially not someone who had saved my life. Even if that person was Christine, I still wouldn't give up the source. But I had no other evidence whatsoever to prove that I was in danger.

I let out a sigh, "No, sir."

"Go home, Anthony," he said as he rose from the couch and headed upstairs. "See you at work tomorrow," he added before disappearing from my view.

I felt stupid, but I wasn't too surprised. I should have known there was no way the boss would have believed me.

Chapter twenty

Laura

I couldn't sit still. My heart was racing, and I felt like it was about to jump out of my chest. Anthony was on his way to my place. He had just messaged me to say that he had finished meeting with my dad. He said he couldn’t tell me anything over the phone because I wouldn't understand what he meant. What did that mean? I had never had anyone I was dating meet privately with my dad before, and the thought of what my dad might say or do made me feel uneasy.
