I pull it to my ear when Gio says, “Unmute it.”

Thankfully, the area is not busy with noisy traffic.

Pressing the unmute and speaker buttons, I hold the phone out for them to hear.

“Hello?” I say.

Silence.

“Hello?” I try again.

Then I hear it.

Heavy breathing.

“Sadie?”

No. No, no, no.

“It’s Christian,” the caller says in a small voice.

“What do you want?” I clipped.

“I need to talk to you.”

“Christian, I don’t have anything to say to you. Please do not call me again.”

“Sadie, ple—”

I hang up the phone before he can continue.

“What the fuck? He’s harassing you through the phone now?” Seb growls, taking a step back as if to calm himself.

All I can say is what. The. Fuck.

“If he calls again, don’t answer,” Seb warns.

“I won’t,” I promise.

But by the shakiness in Christian’s tone, my curiosity may break that promise.

Chapter 22- Donovan

It’s a perfect day for the game, and I’m in a fucking fantastic mood. Things with Shorty are moving in the right direction—toward our futuretogether.

I pick her up every night from work, even though she has her car back. She doesn’t fight me on it since she knows it makes me feel better knowing she’s safe, but I think it makes her feel better, too.

“Yo, D! Where’s your head at?” Jag yells from the dugout.

The ball comes flying as soon as he says that, but I catch it in time.

“The fuck?” I hiss at Wyatt.

“Get your head out of the clouds, man.” Wyatt laughs, and I flip him off.

“Stop messing around!” Coach yells from the sideline.

“I see why he’s on cloud nine,” Jag yells, and Coach tells him to knock it off.
