Page 79 of I Saved Him Too

During my time with Donnie, I have picked up on a few signs that trigger his need to pound a guy’s face in until it is nothing but mush. And the only way to calm him down and bring him back to me is my touch.

Slowly, I walk further into the room and place my hand on his chest.

“Hang up,” I tell him quietly.

Slowly, the anger dissipates when he hangs up the phone.

“Why was Christian calling you?” He swallows, clutching my phone in his grip. If he doesn’t let go, he’s going to owe me a new one.

“I don’t know, and I don’t care,” I respond in a flat tone.

“He called you before?” His eyebrows furrowed.

I nod, keeping my hands on his chest, which feels like a brick wall.

He tips his head back and lets out a frustrated breath. I feel him pulling away, so I wrap my arms around his waist and hug him.

I hear his heartbeat slow down when he wraps his arms around me.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Donnie asks softly.

“Nothing to talk about. He’s locked up.”

“Do you ever wonder why he did what he did?”

That’s the million-dollar question.

“Not anymore,” I say honestly.

I’ll probably never know. Christian became a different person the summer before our senior year. It was like his body was taken over. He always seemed like he was high on cocaine.

My phone rings, and Donnie’s body tenses. I look up to see his eyes shut and he breathes in and out. I gently pull away, but he doesn’t let go.

“Donnie, it’s probably Tia.” I reach for his hand and gently take the phone from him.

When I look at the screen, I smile.

“See? It’s Tia.”

He exhales and opens his eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I love you.”

“I love you so much.”

We pull apart, with me already missing his closeness, and I put Tia on speakerphone.

“Hey, Tia.”

“Don’t Tia me!” she snaps. “Do you know what happened today?”

“No, wha—”

She interrupts me.

“This motherf—yourboy’s brotherkidnapped me at school and threw me in his car! I mean, what the fuck?”

Donnie and I try to suppress our giggling, but end up bursting into laughter.
