Likewise, I believed him when he said he wasn’t with Bronwyn the night of the phone call, even though it was still a mystery how she had his phone. Maybe she palmed it during a training session; I didn’t know and really all that mattered was the overwhelming love I felt when I was with him and how Remi adored him. He was amazing with her, and she beamed whenever he was in the room. We both had pain we had to let go, and I was confident we’d conquer it together.

“Huh, huh, huh!”

I heard Remi crying through the intercom and jumped up and rushed to the glass. Everyone else, followed, though it took Chase longer to move and his dad went to help him up.

“Mommy! I want my mommy!” She was screaming at the nurse; no doubt scared by the personal protection equipment she was wearing.

My heart jumped up into my throat. “Remi,” I said as calmly as I could. “Baby, I’m right here.”

She was sitting up in bed and the nurse in her space suit was near her and pointing at me through the glass. “Look, Remi, there’s your mom.”

“Ahhhhhh,” she cried, obviously scared by the nurse’s appearance. “Mommy!” She was crying hard and holding her arms out to me, beseeching me to come to her. “Ah, ah, ah, ahhhh!”

“Calm down, baby girl. You’re okay, sweetheart.” It was such a helpless feeling knowing I couldn’t get to her. I felt like crying myself.

“Mommy!” She looked over at all of us with tearful eyes.

“Remi, Daddy, and Jensey are here, too. We’re all here, baby,” I tried to soothe her. “Do you see us?”

Jensen held up his hand. “Hey, squirt.”

Frank had one arm around Chase’s waist and Chase’s was over his father’s shoulder. They limped to the glass, and Chase released his father and put both hands flat on the window.

Roma stood next to me, both hands over her mouth, as she watched her granddaughter. “Poor little thing.”

“Remi,” Chase said; his deep voice resonating. “Baby, remember we talked about this. You have to be behind the window for a little while until you are stronger, but we’re all here with you. It’s only for a few days, but you’re safe.”

Remi hiccupped but her head snapped to look at her father and blinked, tears still rolling down her face, though she was no longer wailing.

“Remember? Until Daddy’s marrow makes you better, you have to be in there for a few days. Pretty soon, everything will be easier, princess. I promise.”

“Squirt, the nurse in that suit is Sally. Look at her face inside her hat. Don’t be frightened, honey,” Jensen added. “The doctors and nurses have to wear those funny suits. Aren’t they goofy?”

She hiccupped again and nodded, letting her eyes skirt over Roma and Frank and then back at her nurse.

Sally moved closer so Remi could see her face through the clear acetate in the front of her hood. She put her hands out to calm Remi down. “It’s okay, Remi. I’m here to take care of you, and Kari will be in later. And Dr. Radar, okay?”

My heart broke that I couldn’t be in there to take her in my arms and ease her fears.

Remi sat in the middle of the bed, glancing around. While she wasn’t crying as hard, I could see she was frightened.

“Oh, God,” I murmured painfully. “I wish I could get in there.”

Chase was standing to my right and his hand came down on my left shoulder and he kneaded gently. “She’ll be okay, Teagan. You have to keep calm.”

I nodded, still looking at Remi. I had her two favorite stuffed animals in a plastic bag on the counter, but if she couldn’t have them in there, it might just upset her. “Remi, I have some of your books and we have your songs. I’ll read you a story after you have some dinner, okay?”

“Or, maybe I can read to you,” Roma suggested gently. I could see it on her face that she wanted desperately for Remi to know who she is.

“Who are those people?” She pointed first at Roma then Frank.

“This is my mom and dad, honey. They are your grandparents,” Chase answered.

Remi’s eyes were like saucers as she checked them out.

“Hi, pumpkin,” Frank waved at her, grinning from ear to ear. “I’m your Grandad and this is your Nana.”

“We’ve been waiting for you to wake up. We’re so happy to meet you, Remi,” Roma said tearfully.
