“So do I—perhaps prepared for different things. Tell me, Tab, if we were attacked right now and I told you to grab some essentials and run, would you know what to take?”

“Well, I suppose I’d take my purse, some clothes, shoes, toiletries, that kind of thing.”

“Really? Which clothes, exactly? Which shoes and purse? Keep in mind that you have about thirty seconds here.”

Tabitha stared hopelessly around the monstrous walk-in wardrobe. “I, uh… Well, I guess you’re right. I’m not really prepared to run at a moment’s notice. Do I need to be?”

JK sighed. “No, I suppose not. There is no significant risk to you while nobody knows who you are. It’s just not what I’m used to.”

Just another reminder that anything between her and Tabitha was a bad idea. JK had never met anyone as different from her as Tabitha was. Opposites may attract, but the things that made them opposites tended to drive them apart.

“Well, these are the evening gowns. What do you think?”

JK had no idea what criteria she was supposed to be judging this on, so she just picked something she thought was pretty.

“That green one.” The emerald green satin would match perfectly with Tabitha’s eyes, which was probably why Tabitha had bought it in the first place.

“Perfect! Then you can wear this green shirt with this black blazer and pants and we’ll match.”

“Great.”

“Don’t sound so enthusiastic, JK.”

“I’m totally enthusiastic!”

“Yeah, right.”

JK couldn’t quite hide a smile and Tabitha giggled. Her giggles were endearing and JK felt herself being drawn in again.

Stop it. She is so young.

“Okay, we’ll be casual for the movie, and we can stop back here to get dressed for dinner. Do you know what movies are on right now?”

“No, but I can google it.”

“Nah, let’s just see when we get there. I’m sick of living my life online. I have to do that at home—that or get mobbed whenever I leave the palace. Here, I want to go out and experience everything the world has to offer.”

It wasn’t fair that Tabitha had to deal with all this. She was so young. She should be allowed to explore the world freely, but circumstances had robbed her of that.

“Then I guess we’re going back to that damn mall.”

“Don’t worry, it’ll grow on you.”

“Yeah, like a tumor.”

Tabitha giggled again and held out her hand. JK took it without thinking, and by the time she realized what she had done, it seemed too late to take it back. The two of them walked hand-in-hand through the house and out to the car, where Jack was already waiting for them.

“Good morning, Ma’am.”

“Hey, Jack.”

“Hi, Jack! We’d like to go back to the mall, please.”

“Right away, Princess.”

“Tabitha.”

“Yes, Princess Tabitha.”
