“Thanks, JK. Let me know when you’re ready to take on another job.”

“That’ll probably only be when Tabitha leaves,” JK admitted.

“I figured as much. Do you have any idea when that’ll be?”

“Not really, but I can’t see it being that much longer. She’s been here a while already, and it hasn’t exactly been a positive experience for her. She’ll probably want to be heading home sooner rather than later.”

“Well, regardless, when you come back to work, I want your full attention, which you can’t give me while your heart is still with Tabitha. I’ll wait until you’re ready.”

“Thanks, Gray. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, JK.”

Gray had been more understanding than JK deserved. She dreaded the day when Tabitha went back to England—when she would finally have to move on. She gave brief thought to following Tabitha there and watching her from afar, but that was creepy and stalkerish, and she wouldn’t do it.

Besides, what kind of life would that be? Watching the woman she loved go about her life, like looking through a pane of one-sided glass, unable to touch or be seen. It would drive JK crazy with longing.

No, JK would wait for Tabitha to leave before trying to pick up the pieces of her life.

Loving Tabitha had forever changed her, and she didn’t think she would ever be the same again.

Despite everything, she couldn’t bring herself to regret it. Her heart may be broken beyond repair, but she wouldn’t exchange the precious time she’d spent with Tabitha for anything. She may live the rest of her life wishing things had been different, but she still had her memories, and no one could take those away from her.

Tabitha

“Ma’am, you should eat.”

“I’m not hungry, Dan.”

“Nevertheless, you still need food.”

“You can just leave it here. I’ll eat later.”

Dan sighed and put down the plate. Tabitha was just drifting off into a blessedly numbing nap when the door opened again.

“Get up.”

Her eyes flew open and she propped herself up on an elbow. “Julie?”

“Get up, Tabitha. You stink and you look awful. You’re taking a shower, and then we’re having breakfast together.”

“Julie, what are you doing here?” Julie was the daughter of a high-ranking government official back in England and one of Tabitha’s closest friends.

“I got a very worried call from your mother, who has received word that you won’t leave your bed and are refusing meals. We’re getting you cleaned up and fed, and then we’ll talk.”

Tabitha groaned and flopped down onto the bed. “I’m tired, Julie. I just want to sleep.”

The next thing she knew, the blankets were being ripped away from her. “Julie! Leave me alone!”

“Not a chance. I’m not letting you wallow in whatever you’ve been stewing in for the past few weeks. We’re going to get through this, Tabitha, but you need to work with me here.”

“I don’t need your help,” Tabitha said mulishly.

“Tough shit, because you’ve got it whether you like it or not. Now get up before I have to resort to more drastic measures.”

Tabitha groaned and pulled the pillow over her head, hoping Julie would leave her alone. To her surprise, she heard Julie’s footsteps leaving the room. That was easier than she’d thought.
