“Did you tell TJ what happened?”

“And what happened?” he asks.

I roll my eyes.

“The two of us, last night, Tucker. We—”

“Fucked like animals?” he continues.

I stare at him blankly. “I don’t want you talking about me and what we did to TJ or Dan or your buddies.”

He glares at me. “You really think I was going to do that?”

“Well, I really don’t know. You and I needed to relax, and that’s our business.”

He wrinkles his mouth, glaring. “‘We needed to relax,’” he repeats.

“Erm…” I murmur, disconcerted. “Well, that was it, wasn’t it? A night to clear this tension between us…no?”

I’m not so sure myself anymore.

“Yeah, that was it. And now that the tension is gone, we can move on. I know.”

He slams his hand on the bar and then takes the beers back.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to tell them about your fucking need to relax,” he mumbles just before walking away.

I stare at his tense shoulders. What’s his problem now? I purposely made light of what happened yesterday, and yet he doesn’t seem to like it. But what would he have wanted, this prick?

I go back to my shift and try not to think about it anymore.

A few minutes later, I’m serving customers while glancing discreetly at the pool tables and nearly let out a curse when I notice the tall blonde bending over right next to Tucker. The tiny skirt she’s wearing leaves no room for imagination. She looks at him with a seductive air while talking with him.

He doesn’t seem to give in to her advances, but the girl suddenly starts laughing and moves a little closer to him. I should go back to the bar but I can’t take my eyes off this stupid scene. I’m waiting for the moment when he’s going to look at her breasts, practically uncovered, but he keeps his jaw clenched, immersed in his thoughts. The girl leans in a little more, a teasing smile on her lips. I walk towards them, not really knowing what the hell I’m doing. The chick is talking to TJ now, but she’s shaking her boobs in Tucker’s direction.

I want to kill her.

Tucker suddenly raises his head and notices me a few feet away from them. He looks as if he was waiting for me to come to him. As if he was waiting for me to tell the girl to fuck off just to mark my territory. But I can’t do that… That would be… insane! Shit! The whole point of spending one night together was that we wouldn’t let it get to our heads afterwards. No strings attached, just good times through sex!

So why do I want to throw my fist in this girl’s face?

She laughs exaggeratedly and then runs a hand through her long locks of hair, biting her lower lip. Tucker continues to stare at me, arms crossed over his chest. I feel like he’s really waiting for me to walk up to him, to take another step I don’t know about. His apparent anger is mixed with something else, something more intense, something darker.

But what does he want? He himself made it clear that he didn’t expect anything from last night, that he didn’t want anything but to spend a night with me. Just one time, without complications. So what is this hot and cold behavior? I’m confused.

I take a step towards him but finally stop. I can’t. I can’t make my life more difficult. I ignore his gaze and return to the bar, deciding not to worry about the pool tables for the rest of the night.

While I am wiping glasses and yawning as discreetly as possible, Dan and TJ stop in front of me.

“Bye,” Dan says with a small nod, which I return.

I remember Tucker’s words. Dan had a relationship with Debbie, which explains a lot. He’s practically lost her, which explains the shadows dancing permanently in his eyes that sometimes give me the creeps.

“Are you leaving?” I ask.

“Yep,” TJ replies. “When are you done?”
