“Miss Foster?”

I turn to her, my eyebrows raised.

“I finished correcting the file you made with your classmate Tucker Bomley about the Larey case.”

My heart misses a beat.

“Your analysis is good, but you’ll see that once I get the notes to you when school starts again next week. No, actually, I want to talk to you about something else.”

Oops…I’m willing to bet she’s going to give me a hard time about what I said to her the other day in the lecture hall, that her friend who is Mikael Larey’s lawyer should get off her ass and try to get him out of jail.

“You were apparently right to believe in Mr. Larey’s innocence. I can’t say anything, except that a new and crucial element has emerged.”

“His lawyer has appealed the jury’s decision?” I ask with a shred of hope.

Professor Richards stares at the Rolex on her wrist. “Oh, she didn’t really need it.”

I walk over to her. “What the hell happened?”

I see she hesitates between rolling her eyes or laughing at my language, but she doesn’t and starts to back away, perfectly stoic, as usual.

“Have a good day, Miss Foster.”

I leave the police station a few minutes later, with Agnes hanging on to me. I immediately text Tucker to tell him that I have just run into Professor Richards and that there is a change in the Larey case. As we pull up to Colfax Avenue, I listen to my little sister with a distracted ear, waiting for a response to my text that doesn’t come.

I come out of my thoughts when I see Sanchez parking his car along the sidewalk. He notices me at this precise moment, and he smiles at me. His long black locks brush against the collar of his black T-shirt, and his piercing at the arch shines under the weak glow of the sun. His dark eyes quickly examine my miniature double who stands at my side.

Agnes stops when she sees me stop and is suddenly silent.

“Hey! Iris!” Sanchez greets me as he approaches me.

I raise my hand in his direction to greet him. “What are you doing here?” I ask him.

“I had an appointment,” he answers. He raises his eyebrows several times, a suggestive air on the face, to make me understand that it was about sex in his appointment.

I roll my eyes and turn to my little sister. “This is Sanchez, a friend from school. And this is my little sister.”

Agnes greets him with a wave but doesn’t say anything, silently analyzing him. Her little frown doesn’t look good to me.

“Oh, shit,” Sanchez continues. “I didn’t know you had a sister. Is she less of a pain in the ass than you?”

I hold back an expletive and punch him in the shoulder, which makes Agnes laugh. Sanchez spins his keys between his fingers, staring at me without saying anything. I wait patiently but eager to get out of there.

“I didn’t know you were around. I mean, do you want to have lunch or…?”

I don’t have time to answer when Agnes beats me to it by crossing her arms over her chest. “You know, my sister already has a boyfriend, and it’s not you.”

My jaw nearly drops. Agnes, damn it!

Sanchez stares at her, his eyes wide, before looking at me. “What?”

“Agnes,” I sigh, warning her.

“His name is Tucker, and I think if you hit on my sister, he’s going to hit you,” Agnes continues.

Sanchez’s stance changes. He stands up straight, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. This news seems to shake him completely. “You…”

“We just messing around, that’s all,” I cut him off to avoid starting a discussion that does not concern him in any way. We may be members of the same damn pack, but my life and my ass are my business.
