Dan feels anger, a lot of anger. And he wants to take it out on someone tonight. But it won’t be on me. I need to get him out of the place safely, let him calm down and sober up slowly. I get up from my stool, looking for my phone. I’ve barely finished sending my text to the tall, dark-haired man who haunts my thoughts when Dan’s voice hits me.

“It’s his fucking fault too.”

His fault too? Is he talking about Tucker? The fact that Tucker feels partly responsible for everything that happened to Debbie? Does Dan also feel that his best friend is partly to blame?

I turn around and realize that he’s really talking about a completely different person. And that other person is none other than Matt, who is walking towards us with a big smile on his face. He winks at Dan.

Damn, I’m not liking this.

I approach Dan again, but he is already getting up.

“Okay, man, let’s calm down,” I exclaim loudly, looking around for Buck.

But he’s taking an order a little further away, and his back is turned. Damn it. Matt approaches and stands in front of Dan with a nasty look on his face, but he addresses me.

“You fuck Tucker, and now Dan. Can I be next?” says Matt.

“Shut up,” I spit. “Stop talking shit.”

I don’t want to play his game, that’s what he wants. I hold back with all my being. He just doesn’t need me to get him into more trouble.

I keep one eye on Dan. He takes one last sip, a strange smile plastered on his face.

“So, Dan, is her pussy is as good as Debbie’s?” continues Matt.

Dan doesn’t react, because he doesn’t need to. A hand suddenly grabs the beer bottle he’s been holding. I hardly have time to understand that this hand belongs to Tucker before he’s already moving. His eyes are cloudy, almost crazy, as he brings the bottle down on Matt’s face.

“What did you say, motherfucker?”

This is it, the storm is here. And there’s nothing we can do but try to get away from it.

45. Calm Him Down

Iris

“Tucker!” I yell as I rush out.

He and Matt have just walked out, quickly followed by Dan. Well, more precisely, Tucker has pulled Matt out of the bar by his throat. Buck is already grabbing his cell phone. I don’t have time to ask him not to call the cops before I rush outside.

I burst out into the parking lot and scan the area, trying to find them. Dan waits, arms crossed. He watches Tucker hit Matt without moving a finger. Why would he do that after what Matt did to Debbie?

But we have to stop them before something more serious happens. The streetlights allow me to make out what’s going on. I run over to Tucker and yell his name again.

“Let him go,” I yell.

He doesn’t listen to me and slams Matt against the hood of a car. The latter throws his fist at Tucker’s jaw with a grunt, then tries to free himself from his hold. But it doesn’t work. My boyfriend is pretty pissed off, as if all the hatred he’s been feeling for weeks is coming out in waves.

He’s going to kill him.

“Dan!” I shout, shaking his arm. “Stop him! Do something, damn it!”

He runs a hand over his shaved head and turns to me. “The only thing I care about right now is Tucker finishing him.”

I take a deep breath and close my eyes for a second. I can’t count on him, he hates Matt as much as Tucker. But I can’t wait with my arms crossed or there will be a murder. I walk over to Tucker, who is still holding Matt against the hood. He clutches his throat until he can’t breathe. I try to remember my lessons, but everything is a blur in my head. When someone is so angry that they’ve gone crazy, you don’t want to go near them.

I ignore this wisdom and raise my hand to Tucker.

“Listen to me, Tucker. You have to let him go. The cops are coming, and they’re going to take you away. Let him go,” I repeat.
