“That’s bullshit,” he spits, now furious.

Oh oh, I seem to have struck a chord. His reaction doesn’t tell me anything. He’s hiding something, and I’m not sure it’s in my best interest to find out what. But another question keeps running through my head.

“Why do you insist that I come?”

My question seems to calm him down a bit. He’s focused on something else now: me. “I told you, I want to eat you.”

His sentence should repel me, but it doesn’t. Not entirely. His words warm my skin in ways that shouldn’t be allowed.

“What if I don’t want to be eaten? Has it ever occurred to you that someone might not want to be part of your Pack?”

My defiant look fuels him even more, I can see that, but I can’t seem to stray from it.

“Are you sure about this? That you don’t want it? ‘It’s our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities,’ you know. So choose wisely.”

I burst out laughing, unable to hold back at those words.

“Are you quoting Harry Potter to me now?”

“Don’t insult Dumbledore.”

Tucker leans a little closer to me. His face is only a few inches away from mine, but there’s no way I’m going to move back first. I stare at him without flinching even though my heartbeat is racing against my will. I don’t know what’s going on but I don’t like this at all. I don’t like the attraction that exists between us at this moment. It is dangerous. It means trouble.

He too seems disturbed. He frowns, still close to me. His hot breath falls on my half-open mouth. His pupils almost dilate.

“Come over,” he whispers. “Unless you’re afraid?”

I can see that he thinks I’m going to refuse again and I don’t want to prove him right. And at the same time, I know that he is setting a trap for me by challenging me, by provoking me to make me look like a coward if I say no. So I decide to fall into his trap willingly, ready to turn it all against him as soon as possible.

“I’ll come,” I say in a determined voice as I stand up. “Let’s see if the wolf isn’t really a big doggie in need of affection. I’ll bring some kibble.”

He starts to back away, a little smile on his face. “Your little body will be enough.”

Then he walks away, joining his friends on the other side of the room.

9. The Hunt is On

Iris

The road is rather slippery tonight. Through the windshield of my car, all I see is black. Absolute blackness.

I thought several times about hitting the brake pedal and turning around. But finally, here I am about six miles from the address that was indicated on the posters. At the beginning of the evening, I had changed my mind and decided to stay home. And then, at seven o’clock sharp, a number sent me a text message.

[Don’t be afraid, little lamb.]

I quickly realized who it was. I wonder how that bastard Tucker got my number!

Now there was no way to give up, the part of my brain that loves adventure had taken control of my body, guiding it through mechanical gestures.

My car left the busy avenues of the city a few minutes ago. As I drive along a road trying to see signs of life outside, I almost miss a narrow passage on my right. I slam on the brake, stopping on the roadside.

Crap. According to my GPS, I’m supposed to turn here to get to the party venue. Is this a joke?

The headlights of my Chevrolet light up the road as I drive over it. Strangely, it’s not in bad shape. I’m expecting my car to get tossed around between potholes on a dirt path, but the ground is covered with a mixture of tar and gravel that makes my tires squeal. After a hundred meters, the path widens a bit. I am in the middle of the woods and still nothing on the horizon. I already have in my mind dozens of horror scenarios in which I get slit or disemboweled at the end.

The road forces me to turn right. My headlights illuminate a huge black wrought iron gate.

But what…who would come to live in the middle of a fucking forest? Why not have an apartment in the heart of the city, where there are signs of life, you know?
