“But I didn’t sleep with any of the wolves for that.”

Then I twist the knife.

“You don’t want one of those cubs to end up between my legs, do you? Why is that?”

In fact, I think I understand the reason for his behavior, but I want to trap him in turn, back him into a corner like he tried to do with me. His breath hits my face, and he clenches his fists. The heat coming from his pores is almost unbearable.

He whispers, inches from my lips, “I told you, Iris, I’ll be the only one to eat you.”

I stare at him, totally disturbed by his proximity and by his words. The sexual connotation that emanates from them does not escape me. For a second, I imagine him between my thighs, in the middle of all these people. I shake my head to forget this…this fantasy that has come over me. I won’t sleep with him. I won’t let that bastard get what he wants like he seems to be used to.

“And how—”

He cuts me off again as he leans into me. As his hands grip my hips tightly, he whispers in my ear, “How do you want me to?”

A furious desire to stick to him assails me. This sucks. It’s the atmosphere and the smell of sex around us! When his mouth lands on my ear and is about to nibble it, I push him away firmly, coming to my senses. “I’m curious but not stupid. Keep your tongue in your mouth.”

My refusal and the way I push him away seem to make his eyes glow with intensity.

He brings his index finger and thumb to his mouth. A whistle sounds as all heads turn in our direction. The music stops. I see TJ, a little further away, taking off his mask and splitting the crowd towards us. OK, what the hell just happened?

“The first phase is over,” Tucker says loudly, turning to his audience. “Let’s see if our little lambs are ready to become cubs in the second.”

The crowd practically roars. TJ bursts out laughing before doing the wolf cry, quickly followed by others. Tucker hurries up the steps of the chapel. My instincts and the adrenaline pumping through my body urge me to follow him.

As we arrive outside, I take off my mask. “What is that supposed to mean?!”

He turns to me, a charming smile stuck to his face. “Let’s see if you can handle the second part. Are you ready to be hunted, beautiful?”

Then he walks away towards the fire and the students gradually join him.

10. Temptation

Iris

Like the others, I walk towards Tucker, and a shiver goes through me as a young man takes the spot next to him and TJ. He is shorter than them but more built. His head is shaved, his eyes black. A tattoo starts along his neck, continues its way under his T-shirt, and ends on his forearms. He presses TJ’s shoulder before letting out a little laugh and then staring at the crowd that is gathering around them.

Who is he?

I can’t help but notice the pained expression on his features behind his cheerful expression.

“If you ask me,” says a girl behind me, “Tucker is definitely the hottest. But Dan…Dan is a pretty little flame that turns into a real blaze when it touches your skin.”

I turn around and come face to face with Sarah, Yeleen’s friend who seemed so possessive of Tucker. Her face is tilted towards me, her blue eyes contrasting with her tanned skin slightly crinkled as she analyzes me in turn. She is wearing tight jeans and a pink shirt with half the buttons open, revealing her white lace bra.

I don’t let anything show on my face. Her voice seems rather friendly, but her look…a look does not deceive. A look is a direct reflection of the soul. It shows others what we would like to hide. And it tells me that Sarah doesn’t like me.

I turn my attention back to the three guys standing side by side and linger once more on the guy with the shaved head.A pretty flame that turns into a real blaze when it touches your skin. So this is the famous Dan? The angular features of his face make him look rather austere, but Sarah is right: he exudes a raw beauty.

“I’m not interested in Dan,” I say simply.

A small laugh comes out of Sarah’s mouth as she leans a little closer to me. “Of course you’re not interested in him. Can you tell me the same thing about Tucker?”

The fake innocence in her voice doesn’t escape me. The brat seems displeased, and you know what? It makes me laugh. I don’t move an inch, keeping a relaxed look on my face, while the other students gather around. A few guys are having fun imitating the wolf howl again, and one of them gets punched playfully in the shoulder.

Those who didn’t make it to the first stage continue to party all over the property, glancing at us enviously at times.

My hazel eyes wander over to Tucker, and I find that he is staring at me as well. We stare each other down for long seconds. I remember his warmth next to me, his breath on my skin. His expression becomes slightly puzzled when he discovers who is standing next to me, but he doesn’t make a move, simply watching us.
