He leans into me further, making a barrier between me and the rest of the forest. He keeps his index finger pressed on his lips, still warning me.

Over his shoulder, I see Yeleen and a guy walking past us, laughing.

“I think there’s one over there,” the guy says, dragging her a little further.

Tucker’s hidden us in the shadows. They don’t notice us as they walk by just a foot away from us.

I don’t move. My chest heaves quickly as I catch my breath. Tucker is leaning towards me. His eyes scan every inch of my face. Neither he nor I speak. He finally lowers his hand and places it on the trunk behind me, right next to my head.

“Found you…I guess this ‘simple treasure hunt’ wasn’t so simple…since you just lost.”

Okay, I get the picture: he’s getting back at me for all the times I’ve stood up to him, especially tonight. He wants to make me pay for it dearly…by eliminating me.

His intention wasn’t to let me win, in fact. It was to prove his fucking superiority as a pack leader, to put me in my place as a little lamb.

But he doesn’t know that the lamb is in possession of the precious ribbon…

“You wanted to make sure I wasn’t just a little puppy…all right, you’ve got your answer now?” he continues in an arrogant tone.

I get it. He’s not a puppy begging for attention. He’s a wolf staring me down. A wolf looking for more than a few scratches behind the ears.

My breath hits his parted lips. I ignore his words, unable to concentrate. This isn’t good; we’re much too close. I should back off, punch him in the nuts and run away from here to declare my victory. But I am attracted to his magnetism.

His mouth is suddenly on mine. A growl resounds in his chest while all thought abandons me. His other hand, on the small of my back, pulls me into him.

My fingers wrap around his hair, and I pull him in even closer. My lips open to his. I don’t think, because I can’t or don’t want to. It doesn’t matter.

My tongue, conquering, tries to make its way between his lips. He refuses me access. I move my mouth back. Our breaths intermingle. His eyes seem as confused as mine. Then he falls against me again, impatient, and my back meets the solid tree trunk. I nibble his lower lip and my tongue begins a sensual dance with his.

It’s as if we are cut off from the rest of the world. I can’t hear anything. I only feel him. The tension between us keeps growing, ready to explode and shatter all our inhibitions in its path.

Then his lips move down my right ear to nibble it. It sends a jolt through my lower abdomen. I hold back a groan, not wanting to show him the effect he has on me. Of all the guys out there, my body decided to set its sights on him? Damn it.

We don’t talk, we don’t need to. It’s not our brains, it’s the tension between us that makes us weak and pushes us to our lowest instincts. When I feel his erection against my lower abdomen, I realize he’s in as much of a hurry as I am, inhabited by a madness that doesn’t have a name. I put my mouth on his neck and suck his skin between my teeth. He lets out a growl while crushing me harder against the tree.

“Damn,” he growls against my ear.

His voice almost makes me shiver. It’s hot, hotter than anything I’ve experienced in the last few months, and it’s too good for me to resist.

“I want you,” he whispers irrevocably.

The tiny part of my brain that is still lucid reminds me that this is nonsense, that we are in the middle of a gloomy forest, that people could arrive at any moment. The two wolves that were close by earlier are maybe still a few meters away!

And besides…

“Why did you want to hide me earlier, when they were approaching?” I ask suddenly, trying to catch my breath.

He made it clear that it wasn’t to let me win…

Tucker continues his way down my neck, and it’s only when I put my hand on his chest to push him away slightly that he seems to come back to reality…and to my question. He seems annoyed by this interruption but ends up giving me a small smile while holding up a ribbon in front of me.

Instinctively, I reach into my jeans pocket, but the ribbon is still there. He didn’t take it from me during our…moment of distraction. And suddenly, I understand.

“You never meant to get me out of the game, did you? You just wanted to put me in my place and teach me a little lesson by winning the hunt. But you still grabbed one of those ribbons to give to me and make sure I got to the next step anyway? And you didn’t want your buddies to find you cheating instead of kicking me out of the woods?”

Tucker just nods, looking satisfied.

“So you didn’t think I could win, did you?” It shouldn’t bother me so much, and yet I just want to prove him wrong for underestimating me.
