“Didn’t you understand what we said, Deels?” he spits in a powerful voice, pushing Matt away from us.

Speechless, I look at this stranger taking my defense.

“Dan,” greets Matt coldly.

“We’ve already warned you, stay away from her,” orders Dan.

I stare at his back, confused. Wait…what? What does he mean, they warned him?

“That’s cool,” laughs Matt, throwing his hands up in the air. “We were just talking, right, pretty?”

I glare at him a little more, holding back from spitting in his face. My voice snaps dryly, “I’m not your pretty girl.”

Matt undresses me with his eyes while a smile remains on his mouth. He takes a step back when Dan seems to lose patience.

“I wasn’t going to hurt her,” the blond man continues with a calculating look.

“You break everything you touch, Deels,” mumbles Dan, shoulders still tense.

Matt leans towards him, as if he’s going to confide in him. “Come on, man, it’s not my fault Debbie was fragile. You should have kept your lioness on a leash, man. Her claws loved digging into me.”

I don’t know who this Debbie is, or what happened between her and Matt, or between her and Dan. But what I do know is that Dan seems transformed when he hears her name.

A raging sound comes from his chest as he moves at breakneck speed and brings his fist down on Matt’s face. The latter steps back, holding his jaw. His features are distorted with anger, but he doesn’t take a step in our direction.

“Talk about her one more time, one more time, and I won’t come to you. He’ll find you and he’ll break your legs before he blows your face off. Then I’ll finish you off, and we’ll leave your body to rot in a pile of shit.”

He?Who is thishethat will come to kill Matt?

Tucker?

I’m caught up in the middle of the fight and can’t get away.

Matt walks away as Dan catches his breath. After a minute, the hatred hasn’t left his features, but he tries to control himself by turning to me.

Neither he nor I say a word. I don’t understand half the conversation, but I know Dan has come to rescue me, so I pull out the first thing that comes to mind, “I believe I should…thank you.”

He seems surprised. His features soften slightly. He looks older than me by a few years, but he is still young. Yet he seems to carry a heavy burden on his shoulders, as if he had already seen too much for a lifetime, as if he had already gone through awful times that had marked him forever.

“It’s nothing,” he replies carelessly.

A question loops in my mind, and I can’t hold my words. “Were you watching me?”

A small smile comes to him, as if this idea seems absurd to him. And it’s absurd to me too. Why would he play babysitter when we don’t know each other?

“Actually, TJ sent me to pick you up.”

I finally understand. I hold back a growl as I roll my eyes. “He never fucking lets go,” I grumble, crossing my arms. “You came for nothing, go tell your friend that I won’t come. The cub refuses to join the cult of psychopaths tonight.”

He clenches his jaw, looking at me intently.

“You shouldn’t say that,” he says in a calm voice.

I raise an eyebrow. So he can’t stand me insulting their group?

“And why not?”

His gaze is lost in the void.
