“Get the hell out,” Tucker orders him.

Sanchez raises his eyebrows, his piercing shining in the moonlight. He stares at me, waiting for my own answer.

“It’s all good,” I say, trying to keep the situation from escalating further.

“Do you want a ride home?” Sanchez asks me politely.

“No,” Tucker almost growls.

“Yes, I do,” I reply.

Tucker is this close to freaking out, which is ridiculous. “Iris, don’t go with him,” he mutters through his teeth. “I’ll walk you home myself.”

Sanchez walks away just after telling me he’s waiting for me a little further on.

A few feet away, TJ calls to Tucker to join him. He seems torn, as if he’s wondering if he should go back with his cousin or stay with me. I decide to choose for him because, at this point, I’m tired of this situation.

“Join him,” I say, pointing at TJ. “As for me, if I want to go with Sanchez, I go. I’m not going to obey your every word, Tucker.”

And I move away without waiting for his answer.

The roar of the car softens as it comes to a stop in front of my building. Despite the anger I feel toward Tucker, his words keep spinning in my head. “You’re not like the others. I hate that, but it’s the truth.” What did he mean by that? That I’m not like all the other cubs who obey his every word? Of course not, we already agree on that. Maybe it was deeper than that, that I’m not like the others, for him. That I am…special? No, my brain is tired and my mind is going crazy.

The silence that has reigned throughout the drive drags on as Sanchez cuts his engine. I stare at the outside of the car.

“So you really weren’t happy to be in this trial, huh?” he begins calmly.

I shake my head, massaging my temples, a headache creeping up on me.

“And Tucker—”

“Tucker is getting on my nerves,” I grumble.

Sanchez watches my profile blankly, and I finally turn my head in his direction. What’s wrong with him?

“Are you guys…?”

I can guess his question perfectly well…and the answer is none of his business. He sees right away that I’m getting defensive and raises his hands as if to apologize.

“It’s just that he was about to rip my head off when you followed me to my car. Making him jealous might not be the best thing to do.”

“I wasn’t making him jealous,” I cut Sanchez off firmly.

That’s true…isn’t it?

He smiles gently at me. “Not at me, Iris. This guy is not just anyone. I just joined their group and I don’t want to end up hanging by my balls.”

“I wasn’t making him jealous,” I repeat a little louder.

But who am I trying to convince, really? I think about Tucker’s words again, and this time I actually understand them. “You’re not like the others. I hate that, but it’s the truth.” He’s used to girls falling into his arms just like that, and part of him hates that that doesn’t happen with me. But another part takes me as a challenge, I can see that…well, he’ll see!

“Thank you for driving me home,” I finish simply by opening my car door.

Sanchez watches me get out, an enigmatic look stuck on his face. Such dark eyes. Damn, I swear I’ve seen that look before.

“See you soon, partner!” he shouts just before the door slams shut.
