“What fascinating news,” I continue, smiling. “I’m in a hurry, excuse me.”

He raises his eyebrows, walking at the same pace as me.

“I thought you were a pain in the ass the other night because you didn’t want to be there, but actually, you just have a shitty temper.”

Affirmative.

I shrug innocently, which makes him laugh, and go on my way, giving him a sidelong glance. “What, now? Are you going to follow me?”

“I’m heading to the cafeteria. Actually, I feel more like you’re following me.”

“I was here first,” I mumble like an eight-year-old.

“I don’t care,” he says as he continues to walk.

Neither he nor I speak for a few minutes, although we walk side by side. We look ridiculous. Finally, I go ahead of him by a few feet and push open the door of the cafeteria. I’m about to let it slam behind my back, but I hold it open for him to enter. I notice a small delighted smile on his face.

“I’m just being altruistic,” I tell him.

He raises both hands in the air. “Of course you are.”

A few minutes later, I find myself with a plate of fries in my hands. I’m almost drooling with anticipation. I have a weakness for anything caloric and unhealthy. I’m pretty sure my blood is slowly turning into a mixture of sugar and salt. A large free table catches my eye, and I rush to it, delighted to have all this space to myself. I didn’t count on Sanchez, who decides to piss me off a little more by sitting there too.

“Listen,” I begin as I wipe my mouth with my napkin, “I don’t know what you think you see in me. But I’m bad company, okay?”

He starts eating his sandwich and then answers me. “I find you funny. You seem to be a pain in the ass and unbearable. Yet you didn’t hesitate to help me on Monday night and refused to leave me behind. I think you’re actually hiding your sympathy behind a bad temper. But I’m okay with that. Or maybe you’re just really boring.”

How does he get me so easily?

“I’m not hiding behind anything. And anyway, I don’t have to justify myself.”

He nods again and continues to eat. “Besides, I hope that all the problems between you and Tucker have been solved.”

I go still, raising an eyebrow.

“Are we interrupting something?” exclaims a female voice, a foot away.

“Not at all,” I reply as Yeleen and Sarah pick their seats. On the contrary, I’m happy to cut short this so-called conversation with Sanchez.

The two girls settle down next to us as if it were natural. I can’t ignore the looks of most of the students, who stare at us with envy, as if we were the new attraction.

“I was just making sure not to interrupt a little something between you two,” Yeleen whispers, staring at us.

Damn, that’s all I needed. Sarah, on the other hand, seems thrilled at the idea that there might be something going on between Sanchez and me. She couldn’t be further from the truth. Sanchez stares openly at her, practically drooling on her plunging neckline.

“I wanted to congratulate you,” Yeleen continues. “I heard you acted like pros.”

“All the credit goes to her,” Sanchez announces while pointing me with the chin.

“Don’t be ridiculous. We did it together,” I correct him, unable to help myself.

“You’re our two new cubs,” she continues in a motherly way, and I refrain from laughing at her.

“And what are we supposed to do now? Become your minions?”

She shakes her manicured finger.

“You don’t get it. Okay, there’s a core group with people I’m closer to and other members who are a little further away from us. But at the end of the day, we’re all one big family, Iris.”
