I hear her sniffling. “We had to present ourselves in front of the whole class. When it was my turn, I heard Isabella making fun of me for being an orphan.”

I squeeze the steering wheel with my available hand.

What a little bitch.

“So,” my sister resumes, “I walked up to her and pulled her hair. And I don’t regret it.”

I try not to smile, without success. I would have done much worse than her.

“Are you going to argue with me?” she finally asks me.

“No, I understand. But don’t do that again, okay? I also want you to be good with Emma.”

I can see her rolling her eyes from here. I hang up the phone a minute later and throw my cell phone on the passenger seat before braking suddenly for a pickup truck on the side of the road, stopped right in front of me.

Damn! I just got the scare of my life!

The rain is still falling lightly on my windows. From here I can see a body leaning over a flat tire.

Okay, that’s not my problem, right? Maybe in reality it’s just a psychopath trying to lure a prey?

Still, a part of me forbids me from leaving. With a sigh, I pull up right behind the truck, keeping my headlights on though due to the lack of light outside.

The rain pours down on the back of the stranger bent over in front of me, and I almost feel sorry for him. Almost.

I open my car door and get out without thinking. “Do you need help?” I shout through the rain.

My soaked hair makes me want to get back into my car, but at the same time, the man stands up and turns to me. His black locks are dripping. When I notice his eyes, one blue and the other stained brown, I dig my heels in.

If I was lucky at one point in the evening, let me tell you, I’m not lucky now. The asshole from my criminology class frowns as he discovers me here, as surprised as I am.

“I have a flat tire,” he finally announces in a loud voice that hits me hard.

“Do you need help?” I ask again, a few feet away from him.

“Unless you have a spare tire,” he spits, “no, you’re no use to me.”

I raise my eyebrows and mentally curse at him in every language I know. “You’re really stupid, you know that? Go ahead, cope on your own,” I reply, heading back to my car.

“Hey, calm down.”

I hear footsteps behind me but I ignore them.

“When people say that redheads have a shitty temper, I can now confirm that it’s true.”

Furious, I turn around towards him and almost run into him when I discover him right behind me.

“You’ve got some nerve, man! I come to offer you my help, and you tell me to fuck off. Do you think I’m going to smile at you afterwards like a simpering idiot?”

My anger seems to amuse him. “First of all, I wasn’t telling you to fuck off. I was just stating a fact, that without a tire, you weren’t going to be much use. And secondly, I’d love to see you simpering.”

I roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest.

“You’re unbelievable,” I sigh.

He stares at me without flinching for a second, and I stare back. Then his eyes land on my soaked T-shirt and my hair in the same state. I watch him in turn, analyzing the effects of the rain on him. It’s unfair, I’m sure I look like a wet dog when, I must admit, he’s still very attractive despite the situation. He seems to pull himself together and runs a hand through his short black beard.

“You’re freezing, go home.”
