She’s wrong, I know very well that Tucker heard what she said. The information is written down in a corner of his head, I have no doubt. I sigh exaggeratedly, staring at Yeleen, who begs me with her eyes. I hesitate for a second to tell her to go away, but I can’t. She takes her first step towards me, and I can see that she is genuinely sorry and blames herself. In reality, she couldn’t really control the words that came out of her mouth.

After a second, I casually wave my fingers in her direction. “It’s okay, stop giving me that mopey face.”

She claps her hands, overexcited. Her eyes become sharper, more calculating. “Perfect, so get ready.”

I let out another laugh, mocking this time. “I forgive you, but I’m not going with you, Yeleen.”

“But you are part of the Pack, my dear. If you refuse to come to it, it will come to you.”

She doesn’t look like a fragile little thing anymore, so I glare at her. “You’d bring your friends to my house? Let me tell you, I’d kick their asses.”

“You facing dozens of excited students, I’m not sure your tough-guy look will last forever.”

I stand my ground, folding my arms across my chest. There’s no way I’m giving in.

A few minutes later, I let out an expletive as Yeleen opens the closet across from my bed. I fall backwards onto the mattress, wondering what the hell I’m doing.

I stare at the ceiling, leaving her to search by herself.

“But why do you have so many sweatpants?” she sighs defeatedly.

I don’t bother to answer her, immersed in my thoughts. A question is running in a loop in my head. I try to ignore it, while thinking that Yeleen would be the ideal person to answer it. My mouth opens by itself.

“Hey, what exactly happened between Sarah and Tucker?” I try to make my words sound casual, my voice relaxed.

A silence answers me.

I sit up on my elbows and find that Yeleen is watching me, a little smile on her face. “What?” I grumble. “It’s a question like any other.”

She raises her eyebrows and sits down gently in front of my closet. “I knew it! He likes you, that’s a fact. But you like him too. No need to frown like that, I can see it,” she continues, pointing her index finger at me.

I roll my eyes and try to look natural. It doesn’t work. “It’s just that Sarah won’t admit it, but I don’t think her interest in him is mutual. Am I wrong?”

She runs her fingers over my carpet, her mouth pursed. “I see. So I guess Sarah did her little act on you? Look, first of all, let me just say that she’s basically cool, even though she’s bitchy most of the time. But, her and Tucker…well…”

I sit down on the bed and sigh.

“It’s okay, forget it.”

“They didn’t date,” she continues, ignoring me. “She and Tucker had some fun for a while, nothing serious. But she eventually got attached, while he was looking for nothing more than friends with benefits. They cut it off quickly last year and moved on.”

Tucker has definitely moved on, well, I think he has, but I don’t think that’s really the case for Sarah.

Quite the opposite.

With Drake to the max in the car, Yeleen presses hard on the gas pedal while singing out of tune. I find myself laughing as I listen to the abominable sound that comes out of her mouth. But what surprises me even more is that I also start singing like a fool.

What is happening to me?

“‘God’s plan, ooooh God’s plannnnnnn,’” she shouts while pressing her horn without reason.

The car that we have just passed must not understand what is going on.

“‘I hold back, sometimes I won’t, yuhhhhh,’” I resume, singing as loudly as she is. With my hand out the window, I let the wind hit my skin.
