Then someone was coming down the stairs, the door opened, everyone unsheathed their swords, and Scotty came into the room. He closed the door and shook his head. “I never would have believed it.”

“Are you sure?” Levka asked.

“You think that’s why I sent you and your friends to free William?” Scotty asked Levka.

“The thought had crossed our minds.”

“No. I sent you because, like I said, you’re unknown here to the elders. I assumed you would make it inside and be able to free William without any harm coming to him. I never suspected Eleanor would have been a traitor. Though in retrospect, the knowledge she had about William’s capture and of his whereabouts could have indicated she was working for the other side.” Scotty glanced at her. “You had something to drug her with? How long will it last?”

“Uh, that’s Caitlin’s handiwork.” Levka must have telepathically spoken with her because she was soon entering the room.

“Yes, I can wake her.” Caitlin shut the door, then spoke some words and snapped her fingers.

Eleanor quickly opened her eyes and looked at the people standing there.

Scotty gave her a menacing smile. Stasio assumed he would terminate her for being a traitor. “So what was this all worth to you?”

“I…I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why does William have my sword? How come I’m confined? What did William tell you?” Eleanor looked like she was totally innocent and confused.

But they were used to people who could spin tales that said they were the victims when they were the perpetrators of a crime and wouldn’t take responsibility for their own actions.

“Why did you abandon us?” Levka asked. “You could have helped us fight the guards, but you wanted to stay outside to warn us if the elders’ reinforcements came, which was a sound idea. But they didn’t send reinforcements so we freed William and went around the barn to get you and go and you were gone. You tore off in the SUV before we reached you for a ride. And then we were left on our own to save ourselves. Why?”

“So what are you saying exactly?” Eleanor asked.

“Explain your actions,” Scotty said. “None of it makes any sense.”

“I got a call that said I was to return to our meeting place immediately. I asked why because Levka and his team were leading a successful mission and would soon have freed William. Wasn’t I supposed to stay there? And bring them all back? I argued with the person, and he said those were the orders. I finally said alright, I hoped he knew what he was doing by telling me to return to the meeting room without the rest of you. I could imagine all of you being furious with me when I left you behind. I wasn’t supposed to tell you I had to leave. He said I would distract you from your mission which could get you all killed. Another driver was supposed to reach there before you even freed William so you would be picked up. The next thing I know, you’re attacking the SUV, hauling me out, and knocking me out somehow.”

“You were in an elder car on your phone when they came and took me hostage,” William said.

“That’s how you knew William had been taken and where he was located,” Scotty said.

“One of our blood bonds told me that William had been taken. She witnessed it from—”

“An elder’s car?” William asked, looking furious with her.

“I don’t know what car she was in. She is an informant for me. Shirley Welsh. She has always been on our side. Especially after an elder had her oldest son murdered,” Eleanor said. “Is this really necessary?” She raised her arms still bound.

Scotty nodded to Stasio, and he removed her bindings.

“Who was it who told you to return to the mission room?” Scotty asked.

“Lawrence LaFevers. He said you had ordered it.”

“You were in doubt about the mission, but you didn’t ask me.”

"I tried contacting you, Scotty. I didn't have Levka or his friends' cell numbers. I did try to tell them telepathically that I had to leave, change of mission, Felix was the new driver who was coming to get them, and I had to go back to the mission site. No one responded and I assumed it was because they were in the secure room with William, and no one could hear my message. You didn't answer your phone. I couldn't get hold of you in the vampire way to verify that was what you had wanted. I didn't know what else to do but to do what I was instructed. I've had crazier changes of plans than that, so it's not like I haven't been reassigned for whatever reason in the middle of a mission. I figure someone from higher up made a decision that I needed to be somewhere else. The reason I stayed outside the building to watch for elder reinforcements was because I assumed Levka and his people worked well as a team and I didn't want to break that up by suggesting that someone else guard the building."

"But when you left," Stasio said, "no one was guarding the building."

"I was keeping an eye out as I made my way back to the home where the SUV was parked. There's only one road that goes that way and that's what I was watching, invisibly, of course. If reinforcements had arrived, I would have returned and helped you out. I guess you believe I set this up with the elders?" Eleanor shook her head in disbelief.

Scotty was on his phone sending text messages.

"If I had been in league with them, I would have contacted the elders before we even got there and told them you were all there trying to free William. I would have told them you had dealt with all the guards, and they needed to come quickly. No one came to capture you!" Eleanor looked so exasperated with them. "And by the way, how do you know that I was sitting in an elder's car? I don't know what any of the elders or their chauffeurs drive."

"Could you have been mistaken about seeing Eleanor in the car, William?" Levka asked.
