He had to agree with her there.

After a half-hour rest, they headed out into the hall to target the next elder’s chambers. Everyone practically held their breaths as William went to open the door.

Then he pulled the door open, and it appeared no one was in the main room like they had been in the others. Had they slipped away in time before Scotty’s forces caught up with them? Stasio and the others hurried inside to check the other rooms and found an elder in bed with a highly perturbed mate, both having been sound asleep. Both rose from their bed screaming bloody murder, but the rebels made short work of them.

“Man, they didn’t even give any of their people safe haven,” Eleanor said.

“Exactly,” Jasmine said. “This one was looking out for number one. He must have preferred having his people do all the fighting for him to ensure there were more of them to battle it out with us. Then when it was all over, they could come and tell him.”

One of Elder Pontius’s vampires who had joined them, shook his head. “Which is just why I’m glad I switched sides. Besides, we have all broken a rule or more that would have earned us the death sentence, but we just had to keep it secret.”

Which was just what Stasio had figured!

Again, they took a break even though most of them hadn’t fought this time. They wanted to gather their wits before they tackled the last two sections of the underground estate. If all they had to do was eliminate the elders, that would work out even better. Then they could conserve their energy in the event they had to join Scotty in battle.

It was getting late. Arman stretched. Ruric yawned. Caitlin was resting her head against Levka’s chest, and he was rubbing her back. Stasio sat down on a couch and patted his lap, indicating he wanted Jasmine to sit there. She smiled, looking like she would rather skewer him than do something that was so un-assassin like. She sat next to him though and rested her head against his shoulder.

“We might make it after all,” she said. “Since we brought a few reinforcements with us and if the next area doesn’t have a whole lot of vampires to fight, just maybe we’ll survive this. If we do—”

“We will.”

“If we do, I want to sleep for a week.”

“With me.” He smiled at her.

She chuckled. “You have so messed me up for doing what is right.”

“Yeah, but at least here if the new members take over the League, we’ll be doing what is right and not be considered rogues when we’re doing it. So it’s all good.”

She sighed. “I sure hope this is going our way.”

Then Angus rose from a chair and Stasio knew it was time to battle again. He suspected the next elder wouldn’t have sent all his people to fight for him. That only the one would have been so uncaring about any of his people surviving.

They had just left the room and started the trek down the hall when the door to the fourth area opened. Stasio swore everyone’s heart about stopped. Everyone stood in place, but then as if this would look worse if they didn’t continue on their way, they did and two men came out, their eyes widened at the sight of the vampires, but Caitlin quickly waved her fingers at them, and they hurried down the hall past them as if nothing was amiss. They were blood bonds. William and Angus led the attack inside the room.

Half the vampires in this room were females, but they could be just as vicious or more so than the men. Still, Eleanor called out for anyone to stand down who wanted to join their cause. Stasio guessed there were about twenty vampires here, but more could be in the adjoining rooms.

Hisses and shrieks abounded as the vampires fought the rebels. A vampire cut Stasio’s cheek, but he didn’t feel any pain. Just the blood running done his jaw. Before he could kill him, Jasmine had beheaded him. “No one cuts my mate and gets away with it.”

He felt over the moon that she would make that declaration and hurried back into the fray.

“Come on, Gertie. You’re a rogue. If the elder knows you saved two human children from their brutal uncle, the elder would have no choice but to try you by his rules and have you eliminated,” one of the other elder’s vampires said, fighting her, but not killing her. “Besides, my elder is dead and now we can date.”

The woman stopped fighting and frowned at him. “Who says I want to date you?”

But Stasio realized no one else was targeting her, as if waiting to see if the “would-be” boyfriend could convince her to change sides.

“I have a new flat.”

Still, she didn’t bite.

“And you can keep your cat there. We can even get another to keep her company if you would like,” the guy said.

She smiled, then frowned. “You’d better not change your mind.” Then she swung her sword at one of the elder’s vampires.

He took her on, furious. “You were onourside.”

“I was never on your side. I was onmyside.” Then she finished off the vampire.
