“This is not cooling anything, I assure you.”

She left his straining underlinens on. “You need to lie down.”

The corners of his elegant mouth twitched. “Is that what you’re in the mood for tonight?”

“No exertion for you until you get more of my blood in you.”

He let her settle his head on her lap again, but his grin was impudent. “Yes, my Queen.”

He wasn’t disgusted. He wanted her, strange magic and all. He was even ready to make saving her life fun.

She caressed his hair. “Let me give you what you need before I take, my Grace.”

His smile softened. “I understand that need.”

He sank his fangs into her wrist with delicate precision. Goddess, it was only her wrist, but her loins tightened, and she shifted under him before she could stop herself. He sucked lightly on her vein, once, twice, teasing out her blood. The channeling waxed a little stronger each time. She reached for the arm of the sofa, her fingers closing over the silk damask while she tried to hold her hips still.

Your Will tastes sweetest of all, especially when you’re being stubborn.

Grace Union came so quickly and easily this time. She felt the channeling swell, on the brink of crashing over her.

She answered him aloud, trying to resist slipping deeper into their joined minds. “I must learn to control it.”

You will. But it doesn’t have to be tonight.

“Tonight, you’re injured. I refuse to be the one always falling apart for you to put back together. I will be strong for you.”

Where is it written that we can’t fall apart together?

He took a longer, harder draught from her wrist. Magic pooled between her legs, along with a rush of physical warmth. His nostrils flared, and he rested his head back against her, gripping her wrist more firmly to his mouth.

But his next suck was gentle. Too gentle. His jaw was not locking onto her as it should.

“You are in pain!” she accused.

He pulled her wrist away from his lips with a contented sigh, licking at the trail of her blood. “No. I don’t hurt anywhere. Don’t you dare make me resort to a tube again when I could have my fangs in you.”

“Your jaw is still tender. Don’t think I can’t tell.”

He flexed his jaw, and his tone was more serious this time. “Yes, there is still some weakness in the joint. My muscles are sluggish. But by our Oath, there is no pain. I will be all right, my Grace.”

He needed more blood, faster than just her wrist could give him. And the channeling throbbed deep within her, demanding more than just sips of his magic. “You’re certain you can bite?”

“Let me show you how certain I am.”

She opened her robe to expose her throat. At the heat in his gaze, she found herself pulling it lower to show him her breasts. He rolled over and prowled up her body.

WILLING TO LOSE

Cassia saw the tremble in his shoulder when he let his injured arm bear his weight. She ran her hand over his skin. Much too hot for a Hesperine. She snatched a pillow that was about to tumble off the sofa and slipped it under Lio’s arm to support him.

“You take such good care of me, my rose,” he said.

She had just been speaking to her sister of the past, when she had cared for no one. She had been the Cassia who had struck fear in Miranda’s heart. She had thought channeling Lio’s magic might be the most selfish thing she had ever done.

But no, she was still this person who had learned to look after the people she loved. She knew how to take care of her Grace.

“Let me try something,” she said.
