She breathed a sigh of relief, and he caught it in his mouth with a crushing kiss.

Locked together, their bodies undulated on the flow of magic. The current thrust him into her as it bowed her up to him in arcane tandem. She ran her hands over him, feeling his muscles bunch and flex, her palms making eddies in the patterns of the magic that caused him to shudder.

He pinned her thigh against the back of the couch with his own. Her other heel skidded along the cushions as she sought new leverage. But he hooked his arm under her knee and held her open while he buried himself in her again.

The friction of his shaft and the warmth of his magic built inside her until she thought she would scream. He kissed her whimpers from her mouth, and she tasted his magic on her tongue, lush and smooth. He licked his way along her jaw, sending an arcane tingle over her skin. At last his lips returned to her throat.

His fangs penetrated her fast and hard. Magic coursed deep into her veins. He dragged hard on her vein in time to the current, grinding her into the couch with slow, deep thrusts. Her body hovered on the cusp of climax, as if her hunger would not release her until she ate her fill.

Don’t let me go until you get enough, he said.

She wrapped her legs around him and dug her heels into the small of his back. He grunted, altering the angle of his hips in response to her pressure. Oh, Goddess. The current…the rhythm in this position… She bit down on his earlobe, beyond speech or coherent thought.

Yes. At last. His magic saturated her. She couldn’t hold any more. She was going to break on his power.

Light and shadow and life exploded into the intimate reaches of her mind, echoing inside the mind ward. His Will met hers, sealed to her for an exultant moment.

Her Grace.

Her cry of recognition gave way to a scream of ecstasy. Through every shudder and swallow and pulse, he was with her, sharing in each visceral instant.

Until the connection shattered, leaving them gasping and limp in a tangle on the couch. She cradled his physical form in her arms, his magic still imprinted on her vision in bright spots.

“Oh my Goddess,” he said at last, his voice hoarse.

“How do you feel?” she rasped.

“I have never felt this comfortable in my own skin. Did it help you?”

She shut her eyes, trying to find words for unspeakable gratitude. “I never realized how empty I felt until now. This is the first time in months that I haven’t felt hollow.”

“Now we know how to give you enough magic.” He looked into her eyes. “You will never feel hollow again.”

She found his jaw with her fingers and rubbed it again, gently.

He smiled. “Good as new.”

She framed his beloved face in her hands. “I’m going to miss your beard.”

“Shh,” he murmured. “You fell in love with me without a beard.”

“Your stubble felt so good on my skin.”

“Are you saying you won’t enjoy the sensation of my smooth face between your thighs?”

Her thighs tightened around him at the thought. “I never said that, no.”

“Your new Hesperine skin will be very sensitive when I Gift you. You’ll be glad I shaved.”

“I will never be glad you shaved via fire spell. I may be angry about the duel for a very long time.”

“That’s all right, my Grace. I will feast on your temper, too.”

Lio had expected Solia to be back in Tenebra, or anywhere she might burn her way through some training dummies, but he found her in his library. When he stepped into the large central chamber of the residence, he sensed her aura tucked away in one of the study alcoves.

This deep into Veil Hours, most of the spell lights were out, but a glow spilled across the blue and turquoise tiles from behind one cedar screen. Lio approached between the thick, round pillars, allowing his footfalls to be audible to human ears. He had surprised Solia enough tonight.

She was waiting for him with two scrolls set aside on the nearby writing desk. Lio saw with surprise that her golden scarf was draped across the back of her chair. That was why he could sense her aura so clearly—and her bitter, genuine remorse.
