Now I’d like to give you your first magic lesson, he said.

What? she cried out in his mind. She couldn’t think of magic when her nerves were consumed by nothing but him. She couldn’t think at all.

You don’t need to think. And I don’t need to explain. I can show you in our Union, if you will allow me.

It will bring you closer?

As close as I can get.

I want it.

He hesitated, reminding her, If it feels like too much, I’ll stop.

But it felt as natural and easy as their heartbeats for him to slide into her thoughts. He was already there. His focus deepened their connection as his body pressed heavier over hers, sinking her lower in the water. He delved into her arcane pathways with her, stretching her senses, opening her, guiding her toward what would sate her hunger.

When she tapped into the power under the tower, magic jolted through her. She thrashed in the water, but he held her steady amid the torrent.

This magic…feels like us. It feels so good. What’s happening?

Let me show you.

He began to move inside her. She saw a whole starry sky behind her eyelids. His thrusts and his pulls at her vein awoke her instinct to suckle his wrist to the same rhythm. And she realized what she wanted the magic to do.

It obeyed her desire. The magic surrendered to the cycle between her and her Grace. Power poured through her with every undulation of their bodies, rising higher each time.

When there was too much inside her for even her Hesperine form to hold, she overflowed. Pleasure tore through the endless channels between them, into him, and back into her.

When that climax ebbed, he said, More.

She pulled more from his vein and more of that mysterious power up from the earth. He set a new pace, and they pleasured themselves on blood and magic again.

There was no reason to ever lift her mouth from his vein. But sometime in the endless night, he eased their fangs and bodies apart to care for her. He floated her on her back in the center of the pool with a gentle levitation spell, one hand under her head. “Rest your senses.”

Flowers drifted against her, as if drawn to her. The petals had bloomed into fully grown roses and moonflowers, thriving in the bath like water lilies.

“Impossible,” she breathed.

“Nothing is impossible anymore,” he said.

Lio, always telling her to hope her dreams would come true. Always making them a reality.

“This is my plant magic,” she said. “All of it. But I can feel the blood magic in it, too.”

“You now possess an affinity unlike any other,” Lio said. “A perfect Union of haima and hulaia.”

Hespera had taken that stunted remnant of her power and made it grow into this boundless garden. She had made Cassia’s Lustra magic her own. This magic did not belong to that desperate girl in the kitchen garden. It belonged to Cassia Komnena.

And this new sorceress she had become understood what she sensed below them.

“Lio…the magic under our tower is a letting site.”

“That was my theory.” His whole aura was alight. “But I needed my Silvicultrix to confirm it. This means you are the first to create a new letting site in untold centuries—and the first in history to open one in the soil of Orthros.”

“I don’t understand how I did it, but there is no doubt.”

“It seems to have been an intuitive act of Will during a singular magical phenomenon—the precise moment of your transformation, when your fangs first unsheathed, and your own magic was changed by the Gift. Clearly, your letting site is as unique as your affinity, for it is imbued with both Lustra magic and blood magic.”

“It will take us centuries to study it,” she said, just to feel his delight at the prospect.
