“Here.” Jae’s voice startled me.

Her arm was stretched out in front of me, offering a plate full of food she’d just finished.

“Thanks.”

The hairs inside my nostrils curled from the steam the food produced. It was piping hot and smelled divine.

“Find anything?”

She plopped down on the couch next to me, releasing a sigh of relief after circling the kitchen for the last forty-five minutes. Jae dug into her food without hesitation. I did the same.

“I think I have. A family is seeking help with homeschooling their two-and-a-half-year-old. Boarding is included. From the sound of things, they’re looking for a caretaker who can also educate their little one. Boarding is included in the compensation package.”

“Boarding?” Jae’s eyes blossomed.

“Yes. Boarding and five thousand dollars a month as payment.”

“To teach a two-year-old? Baby, sign me up,” she yelled. “They’ll know everybody on McDonald’s farm—even his mistress down the street.”

“Jae,” I tittered with a shake of the head.

“I’m serious. If your stay is covered, that means the money you’re being paid monthly will just pile up. Aside from personal expenses and food, you’ll be saving.”

“Meals are covered. So is transportation.”

“Shut up!” she gasped. “Let me see. This has to be a scam, Aeir.”

“The account is verified. Users have to go through so many steps to get verified on this platform. I took a look at the verification process earlier this morning before starting my search, just to make sure everything is legit. The process is extremely quick but tedious. They have to upload documentation, submit banking information, and a few other things. If the job is on here, it’s legit.”

“Where is it?”

“The Meadows.”

“The Meadows? Okay. Nothing is really out that way but land and houses with way too much space. It’s not like the city, Aeir.”

“Which sounds perfect for me.”

Slowly, Jae nodded.

“You’re right. Had you said this two years ago and I would’ve disagreed, but… Yeah. It does sound perfect.”

“And peaceful. It must be.”

Silence had become my refuge. Peace was my prize, and I was striving all day, every day, to obtain it. The large doses I’d been getting since waking up from my coma was addictive. I craved more and more and more. Always and in all ways.

“Are you going to apply?”
