I wouldn’t be upset if you did, I thought.

“Okay.” I nodded.

“Aight.”

“I’ll go.”

“You should.”

In no hurry, I gathered my things and pulled my dress over my body. I didn’t bother to put my panties on because I knew they’d be coming off again once I got to the cottage to shower. Malachi didn’t bother seeing me out the door and I didn’t blame him much at all. He was restraining himself and I needed to do the same.

My walk to the cottage was uneventful, but it was awakening. It felt shorter and more pleasurable than before. And when I finally made it inside, the tears I’d been holding onto, I cried.

He’s aching.

SIX

Not even thesun could outshine her. She cleared the fields as she made her way down the road, making everything around her disappear. I placed a hand over my eyes to shield them from the harsh rays and get a clearer view of what was headed my way.Trouble. The good kind, but trouble, nonetheless.

It had been two days since I’d seen her, two days since I’d gotten baptized in her holy water. Two days since I’d stroked that pussy like it was my last. But that wasn’t her title to have. It was Anna’s.

Somehow, someway, I hardly regretted lending it. I was still rummaging through my head and my heart, trying to see if I regretted any of it.Did I want anything to do with Aeir? No. Not even in the slightest. But since the day I heard her voice over the phone, I didn’t feel like I’d had much of a choice. To characterize that as frustration would be an understatement.

And there she was, clad in olive with her brown skin toasty from spending her evening sunbathing in the fields. Her presence made me sick to my stomach and well at once. It was disturbing, to say the least. I hated what she reminded me of but I was thankful that she reminded me it was real.

For the last two years, it had been hard to determine because there was no way life would rob me that way, of something so precious. It couldn’t have been for real. It must’ve been a hoax.

“Good morning,” she crooned, or so it seemed.

Her voice was the sweetest melody, causing the hairs on my arms to stand tall. Unable to respond, I settled for silence as I watched her, digesting her presence and beauty at once. She was captivating and I was captivated.

“Well, okaaaay,” she continued with a smile.

It disgusted me, the way she could remain composed under almost any situation. The definition of unbothered, nothing rattled her, I could see.

“Mr. Domino, I was—”

“Don’t call me that shit.”

Stepping off, I pushed the shovel into the ground and pulled up the patch of weeds that needed to be removed. They were sucking the life from my plants.

“I don’t understand,” she sighed. “You said to call you Mr. Domino.”

“What’s my name, Aeir?” I asked, leaning down to grab the weeds and toss them into the pile where the others were waiting to be discarded.

“Mr. Domino.”

Shaking my head, I ignored her ignorance and continued the task at hand. Until she got her shit together, there was nothing more for us to talk about.

“Malachi,” her voice rang out, stopping me in my tracks.

Looking up, I cut my eyes in her direction. The discomfort on my face had me rethinking my next set of words. She meant no harm, but I’d be damned if she wasn’t causing any.

“What?”

Releasing the breath she’d been holding, she smiled, pissing me off a little more. What the fuck is there to be so happy about?

“I’d like to go into the city,” she expressed. “To begin gathering things for the classroom and to clear my personal list of necessities.”
