Tears threaten to spill. I can’t speak for a few seconds in fear of breaking down in big, fat ugly tears.

His lips brush against mine. “You’re a special woman, Honor. We plan on showing you how special every day of our lives starting now.”

“Thank you,” I say shakily. “Thank you so much!”

I cast them all a look filled with every ounce of gratitude and love welling in my chest.

“Where did you get all this?”

“We’re resourceful,” Austin calls over his shoulder. I watch him untie a small apron from around his waist and toss it aside. In his hands, he has napkins and plates.

“We thought since going outside isn’t a good idea, we’d bring the picnic inside.”

“I love picnics. My mom used to take me on them. Before, ya know.”

“That okay, sweetheart, let’s make new memories.”

Landry pulls me down to sit on his lap while the other two pile my plate high with everything from fried chicken to fresh salad and biscuits warm from an oven.

I wanted to reach out and touch them, put my hands on them and reaffirm they are not a dream. And then I remember I can. Nothing and no one can take them from me now.

“Did you guys raid Mercy’s kitchen?” I sink my teeth into a warm piece of bread and groan my happiness to the sound of Landry’s chuckle.

“Good?” Austin asks.

“Mm-hm.”

Austin smirks, and we all enjoy our meal in each other’s company. I’m safely tucked in Landry’s arms with Boone and Austin making sure my cup of sparkling water never runs dry.

“Is it cake time yet?” I eye all that chocolate and wonder what it would taste like smeared all over them. This evening seems so surreal I never want it to end.

“Our baby wants cake—I think we should give it to her.”

Austin reads my dirty thoughts instantly and I don’t even try to hide my blush.

Landry takes my empty plate and passes it to Boone. He stands, and holding my gaze, pops the button on his jeans.

“We have a special birthday present for the birthday girl.”

I know they’re working hard to keep my mind off of everything and why we are here to begin with. I have to say, it’s working.

A flash beyond the window catches my eye and at first I flinch, but it’s only the storm I spotted rolling in earlier finally arriving. Fingers of lightning splinter across the dark sky again, but there is a figure in the light. Boone must have followed my line of sight because he’s kneeling beside me and blocking me from the window before I can get a warning out.

Landry and Austin flank me, their guns in hand.

“Where the hell did you guys have those things?”

Landry’s brow hikes up like I’m crazy to even ask such a question.

The lights flicker and dim but hold steady, and I push to my feet. If there’s going to be a fight, I’m not going to give them an easy target to hit by cowering in the corner.

Big hands I recognize as Boone’s shoves me behind him and something cold is pressed into my hands.

The sensual look in his eyes from a moment ago is replaced with a look of lethal intent.

Landry douses the lights covering us in a blanket of pitch black.

I can’t see more than the outline of Boone. “Use this if you have to—just make sure it’s not one of us you’re shooting. Safety is off.”
