“I don’t want to hear about how one of the Lukin men was sniffing around the Balakin hotel. We’re aligned with the Lukins now, and you need to remember your place!” Ivan yelled.

I exchanged a glance with Reina, but she only shrugged. She didn’t know much more than I did.

As footsteps drew closer, Reina pulled away from the door, and I followed, both trying to hurry away as if we hadn’t been listening.

Before we could get away, the door swung open, and Nikolai appeared in the hall, red-faced. He was fuming, surely the one taking Ivan’s scolding.

Reina offered me an empathetic look before she went around Nikolai and slipped into the office. The door closed behind her, leaving me alone to deal with my disgruntled husband. Even then, it was strange to say.

“What are you doing here?” Nikolai growled, in my face within seconds.

I swallowed against the lump in my throat, aware of how intensely the anger rolled off his shoulders. “Reina invited me out. She wanted to dance—”

“It doesn’t matter,” Nikolai grumbled, eyes skittering up and down my body in one sweep. Darkness filled his eyes, and he grabbed my arm. “Come with me.”

Nikolai handled me roughly as he half-pulled me down the hall, unrelenting with his tight grip. I fought against him at first, not appreciating the treatment. But once the odd shiver ran down my spine, I realized it wasn’t so bad.

I almost liked how possessive it seemed. It made my stomach flip.

Giving up on the struggle, I followed along behind him, wondering where he was taking me.

Was he upset I was out when he wanted me locked away at home?

Relief flooded me the moment Nikolai pulled me into a darkened corner behind the DJ booth, mostly concealed by black curtains draped all around us. He reached for my waist and yanked me closer to him, running the other hand through my curls.

That angry, yet lustful storm filled Nikolai’s gaze as he took me in hungrily, not shy about how he moved me against him.

“I see you picked my favorite,” Nikolai growled, grazing his palm against my side, over the soft material of the fitted dress. “Who decided you could wear that here? Where everyone can see you?”

Mustering up the courage to speak, I looked up at him, startled by how beautiful he looked in all his frustration. “I did.”

Nikolai chuckled darkly, fitting a hand against my jaw, tipping my chin upward to face him fully. He had absolute control over me. “You’re a brave girl.”

A shiver ran through me, and I was keenly aware of the warmth that gathered in my belly. He was too much.

“But you belong to me, and nobody else deserves to see you like this,” Nikolai hummed, pulling me impossibly close, dipping his head closer to mine.

The messy collision of our lips made me pull back, trying to break free from his rough handling of me. But blinded by his anger and lust, Nikolai pushed back into me, and my back hit a wall.

I thought about tearing away from him, but I was too stunned by the intensity of his mouth against mine, yearning as he clutched me against him.

There was nothing to fight, not when I liked it.

My heart hammered in my chest, overwhelmed by how addicting his lips were. I wanted nothing more than to get lost in the bliss of having him near and not resenting me. Becoming reacquainted with the ground-breaking passion between us.

Head spinning, I clutched the front of his shirt and gave in to him, silently hoping and pleading for more.

Nikolai was undeniable, and I’d be an idiot to pass up the rare affection he showed me.

Chapter 12 - Mila

Nikolai’s lips seared against mine, leaving me begging for more of his touch. He leaned into me and swiped his tongue against my lower lip, asking for entrance. More than willing, I opened my mouth for him and moaned softly at how he claimed dominance without any resistance from me.

It was hard to believe he had been in that office not long prior, bearing the weight of Ivan’s harsh words. It seemed I was the one he chose to take that frustration out on, but I couldn’t complain, not when his lips devoured me wholeheartedly.

It struck me then that their argument had been about my father’s men. I had forgotten that the alliance between our families meant bringing my father’s people into the mix as well, and I had no idea what his motives were. Or what he was planning.

I was completely in the dark when it came to every aspect of business dealings, but if my father was involved, it couldn’t be good.
