I smiled. “No one will ever tease our child, Theresa.”

She slapped her hand over her mouth. “You can’t put a hit on school children,” she whispered.

“Sure I can,” I teased, delighted to see her smile.

“It’ll be a girl, we’ll name her Margherita, and she’ll…” she trailed off, her smile fading.

“What is it?”

With a sigh, she took her last bite of fries and dabbed her mouth with a napkin. “I don’t know what to do, and I don’t have anywhere to go,” she admitted.

I waved for the check and reached over to wipe away a dot of ketchup that she missed. “Of course you do. You’re coming home with me.”

Chapter 17 - Theresa

I woke up nestled against Aleksei’s chest and, with a sigh, tried to roll over and go back to sleep, so I could get back to whatever dream I was having. But I couldn’t roll over, and Aleksei’s arms tightened around me. Fully opening my eyes, I saw we were in his elevator, heading up. Not a dream. This was real. I groaned as it all came rushing back.

“Almost there,” he said, dropping a kiss on top of my head.

“I can walk,” I said, half-heartedly trying to get down.

“But you don’t have to,” he said.

In his apartment, he settled me on the couch and put the remote in my hand. Wrapping a blanket around my shoulders, he went and made a ruckus in the kitchen, finally returning with a big mug full of cocoa.

“I made this from scratch,” he said. “It’s shocking I had the ingredients. None of those nasty white blobs, though.”

“Marshmallows?” I asked, giggling as I held the steaming mug to my face and inhaled the rich, chocolatey scent. “How do you dislike marshmallows? I don’t think we have anything in common at all.”

After I took a swig of his remarkably good cocoa, he took the mug and placed it on the coffee table, then leaned close. “We have plenty in common.”

Being with him again, far from my mother’s perfidy, his smiling face just inches from mine, rejuvenated me.

“You’re right,” I said, sliding my hand behind his head.

His lips met mine, but softly. I grabbed his shirt and pulled, but he was immovable. He nipped my lower lip and smiled, taking my hands from his chest. “You’re exhausted, little one. Time for bed.” He picked me up again and carried me to his room, easing my feet to the floor. “Stand still.”

He began to undo the corset laces down the front of my dress and I gusted out a relieved breath when the skin tight dress was loose enough to slide down my body. Taking my super, heavy duty shapewear panties in his hands, he chuckled as he tugged them down my legs.

“Stop,” I said. “This isn’t sexy.”

“You’re always sexy,” he told me, kissing my stomach before standing up to turn me around and unhook my bra. “But tonight you’re getting in my bed to sleep.”

Still, when he had my bra off, he slipped his hands around to cup my breasts, dropping another kiss on my shoulder.

“I swear I’m not that tired.”

“Too bad. I am.”

I turned and reached for the clear evidence that he wasn’t, but he dodged me and disappeared into his closet, leaving me standing naked in the middle of his bedroom. He returned with a soft t-shirt and a pair of jogging pants and demanded I put them on.

“I’d rather be naked,” I said. “You know once we’re in bed you won’t be able to resist me.”

“That’s right,” he agreed. “So if you want to sleep naked, I’ll spend the night on the couch.” His jaw set in firm lines. “You need to rest, Theresa. For the baby.”

With a sigh, I pulled on the overnight shirt and big, soft joggers and flopped onto the bed. He pulled the covers up to my chin, then lay down beside me and put his arms around my middle, over the blankets.

“I guess this isn’t so bad.” I snuggled against his chest and closed my eyes. “You’re right, I am pretty sleepy.
